after doing my head gasket and ballsing up the timing yesterday i stripped it down today and re-timed it (out by a fraction), but the bloody thing is sounding tappy/clacky! she wont idle properly (lumpy like tick over is to low) and misses untill up to temp. once warm she revs quite freely but is not happy to idle what so ever! if reved its like the clack goes till the revs drop if you get me?... the head came of my old 325i and has sat in my shed for almost 2 n half years but was quiet when it was on the old car... i did put 10/40 part synthetic oil in her but was told tonight by a friend that normal 10/40 is what i need and should quieten her down. can any1 with knowledge help me please? my heart n soul is in this car and i want her to run good for me after my efforts. thanx in advance

Ignore your friend!
I think a compression check should be done first of all to see if you've bent any valves.
The ECU can loose the idle settings sometimes when it's been disconnected from a battery, and needs time to re learn them. This may or may not be part of your problem.

The compression test will tell you that!

I've bought and run two M20b25 with the cambelt out by one tooth.

Engine will run, no bent valves, but the compression will be lower.

Hi, when i swapped my head out, i had a similar problem. All were sorted with a valve adjustment, nice tight .25mm. It was night and day with the power difference and smooth idle.

This may not be the problem as you said your head was fine 2 years ago and has been sat there, but it'll only take 30mins and is worth doing anyway and ruling that out.
