Does anyone know if it is possible to replace the two part system on a 91 325 with the downpipe/middle/tail setup from an earlier car. In other words, is the cast manifold compatible with either system?

Yes it is possible. My 320i which now has a 2.7 engine used to have a 2 piece system, that was replaced with a 3 piece system during the engine swap.

You'll need the downpipe for a single piece manifold, some of the earlier cars had 2 manifolds (1 per 3 cylinders). The one-piece manifold uses a single piece downpipe (2 downpipes welded to a single manifold flange) whereas the earlier 2 piece manifold has 2 seperate downpipes with seperate flanges.

I got my exhaust from euro car prats, the Boysen system is best as they are the supplier to BMW. So ineefest it's the same exhaust you'll buy for twice the price at the dealer winkeye

so as long as you change downpipe to tailpipe and keep the same style downpipe to manifold flange, then everything is ok?
