Good thinking Andy, the backbox would fit a treat I reckon, getting one at reasonable money however is another story, I think the system is one piece also, most Z3 parts seem to come at a premium especially as its 99% specialist breakers that get the scrap.

I am happy with quietness to be honest mate.

There is no cat and only 2 very small straight through middle boxes in mine. Pluss its 54mm straight though. I think it will be ok. No valve in the tail pipes too.

If you could get a z3m system that would be

I have considered Z3 2.8 systems as the fit with very little fettling ( need to extend (or shorten) the pipe under the beam a touch) the only problem is to get it right id need the front half too as the full system is twin into single.

There's pics of Z3 systems in this link, another compact M52 swap

Z3M has a Quad system

Wonder if i can get one of these to fit if i loose the spare wheel 8)

The spare wheel sits underneath in a cradle and once thats out there's loads of room under there, probably quite easy to do.

dans "bodge" was good enough to get me home and lasted for a week before i blew it to bits lol

i has a half system made up, i kept a twin 2" system to a magnaflow rear box, twin 2" in and 2.5" out with a single oval pipe. the noise is nice but can be a touch annoying at times. didnt want to cut the rear bumper and wanted it stealthy

i'm not to happy about the build quality of the system ( to many kinks ) so i do have an other complete 2.8 system to hand. plan is to chop the rear box off and leave as mush factory fit pipe work as possible and but my magnaflow box on to have better fit and hide it, as it stands its to low, then i'm going to do the same with the centre section, ditching the cats and factory x pipe and resonator and put in another box from magna flow which has an X pipe built into in.

i'm pretty sure mild steel will be less raspy and lighter. the X pipe will increase power and torque and keep the noise at a sensible level

Im seriously considering a standard Z3 2.8 system now but whats concerning me is why it goes into a single pipe after the cats then has twin tail pipes, why not just go twin straight through, does the single pipe give better flow/noise ect?

I think the later cars had twin pipes all the way Lee, you will still have to mess with it as it will be too short for a standard fit

What about a 6-pot e46 compact zaust? Just trying to throw some lateral thinking in. Didn't they do 6-pot e36 compacts on the continent? If the downpipe routes to the same place, couldn't a bit of ebay.de searching be in order?

Well, I went to visit the BMW breaker today in West brom and he has a fine collection of exhausts in his back passage 8O
I explained who i was and he left me to it, armed with a tape measure i started digging, i found a Z3 2.8 system but no front section with the Y piece in it but it was still a good contender so i put it to one side.
Nearly at the end of my search i spotted something shiny :D Dragged it out and it turned out to be a Scorpion system of some sort, The box measured 50cm so it will fit under (just) but most of all it has 50mm twin pipes into the back box and twin STW coming out 8)

Took it to the guy and couldn't my money out my pocket quick enough when he said £50 (he wanted £50 for the Z3 rear box  )

Looks a bit rough, but here it is.

Image

After half an hour with a wire brush on a drill it looked like this :D

Image

Then gave the tail pipe a lick of Megs polish 8)

Image

Im not sure what BMW its from as its shorter than a 328i rear box, 328i = 60cm Scorpion = 50cm, Also the direction the pipes take are different

Here's some pics to compare

Image

Image

This is what an E36 328i Scorpion system looks like (pic stolen from e36coupe :D ) also note where the hangers are located and the bends in the pipes going into the box

Image

The code underneath mine reads

477 BM 16
9-06

Ive done some searching but cant find anything :? but who cares this will fit a give perfect flow, also ive heard they sound quite fruity winkeye

Scorpion STW FTW 8)

Thats what i was thinking :D

Ive got a standard compact exhaust in my stash, tomorrow im going to lay it next to that to compare.

Im guessing its a Z3 2.8/3.0, what a fookin find if it is 8)

Knowing my luck its probably off an E46 :(
