hi
first post,
got myself a 1991 318is 3 weeks ago, getting used to driving it now, popped the back end out a few times at first, scary for me, scary for the folks behind me. had an alfa before this and it just stuck to the road, but im now enjoying the extra dimension that sideways adds to driving.
problem is though, i had a fold up 'men at work' sign blow in front of the car last week and couldnt avoid it, hit the underside of the engine bay really hard, and now ive got a nasty oil leak from the sump.
is it a big job to remove the sump to give it a good check? and if it is fecked does anyone know where i can get another one?
thanks

the sump is in two parts, the lower one is very easy to remove but the top one requires the engine to be lifted so you have enough clearance.

I hit a jagged bit of curb at mucho mph. Put a gash in the lower sump. Breakers for new sump off a 318i and job done!

got under the car yesterday and once i cleaned the oil from the front half of the underside of the car could see no damage to the sump, no obvious leaks, turned it over went for a run in it, got under it again no leaks, stood around for an hour or so back under and no oil, went for run and no leaks. got pee'd off. later went the shops (in the car) and big splodges of oil had appeared under the car in the 2 mins it was sitting in B&Q carpark and the under side was black again so its impossible to isolate, anyone have any ideas? (its definitely engine oil).
cheers

The easiest thing to do is just replace the lower sump gasket, be careful when tightening the screw it's easy to strip the threads in the upper part of the sump....
It's the same sump / gaskets as the M40 318i
Then cross your fingers and hope all is OK, i wont tell you how long it took to cure the oil leaks in my iS when i first got it.................
