Headlining fun

Well, since getting my touring, i've got the age old problem of the headlining going saggy.. so today I got busy with carefully prising it down and clearing off the foam.



Steam cleaner made short work of the foam though but will be sticking it up with spray mount glue and a roller, hopfully it'll come out reasonally well.



Any tips though would be welcome, and does anyone know how to remove the C piller covers?

done this before ideally you wanted to remove the trims and head lining as it is easyier to do this with it on the floor so the fabric is laid flat also make suee there is no not even the tinyiest spec of foam or rough areas left as when you spray the glue for the fabric when you go over with the mini roller this will all be shown ,ieadlly you want to go to a fabric wholesaler and buy some foam or even what i used laminate floor underlay....hope any of this may help you as it was trial and error before i got any where lookin like new again

I've managed to get about 90% of the foam off, but the last bit's won't come off with steam alone, unless someone knows of a good cleaner.

White spirit and a plastic spatula got the nasty (unbelievably sticky) glue off the underside of the bonnet on mine, though I've never seen this stuff so it might be completely different.

There's a brilliant thread somewhere with a black 325 touring having this done. I seem to remember much humorous frustration ensuing..

This is something i'm desperate to do on my Touring. If anyone knows of any essential techniques etc. then i'd love to know about it - i'm looking to replace the lining with a slightly less stretchy fabric too, so it could be interesting...

You can still buy complete heading panel new from BMW - around £300.

Nowhere near Liverpool to be honest, in Milton Keynes and broke

Anycase, Day 2 and using a foam roller, some spray mount glue... i managed to get it back up



Note:
1: This isn't ideal if you want a perfect finish, but it works well enough.
2: It's still an awkward SOD to do, especially the edges!
3: Wear a hat!, Spray mount glue in the hair is a sod to remove.

Unfortunately i didn't get it quite square and it needed tugging around a bit. which ended up with a few bits sagging. I'll have to give it another go over the weekend.

thats the effect i meant mate so i removed mine again put like 4 mm foam behind and redone gets rid of what us builders say snotters effect

You've got a point, but to be honest, the fabric's a bit of a state, there's mould and cig burns in it everywhere.

And providing i get a job i've applied for, I'll probably splash out on a professional to come out and do a full replacement.

You've done well, mine is still being held up by 8 stratically placed staples.

I have done mine in the touring, I am fairly handy but this is the worst job i have everundertaken...

you need to take it out - or even better buy another to work on so you can just swap them over...petrol removes the 'STAINING' orange foam.

It's recognised that spray glue comes off over time and heat, use a tub of contact adhesive, i bought mine from ebay - you want rapid set (10mins) as you have to glue a bit, stretch a bit, glue a bit etc.
The other guides all mention stretch, but i ignored it and bought nusuede! - its a fucking nightmare, you MUST have strecth in your fabric - the more the better. if you can get it done for £200 then do it, it took me hours and it doesnt look that great.

Seriously good luck mate - if you do buy another headlining to trim remember it must have the same check control and electric/manual sunnroof. job good luck
