As it's been over 20 years since I last enjoyed an E30, can anybody let me know whether the blue and red temperature control should illuminate at night?

Mine doesn't but I think it should. I removed the centre console and had a root around behind the control, but couldn't see any obvious signs of bulb holders.

Thanks

Magpie - mine doesn't have any numbers around it, just the blue and red.

If you have an analogue clock, pull off the surround, squeeze in the clips and pull the clock out forwards, and unplug it.
The bulb that illuminates the temp dial is immediately below the hole.
IIRC, numbers around the dial are fitted on cars with climate control.

Brian - did exactly as you said and after replacing a very black bulb, now have a fully illuminated temperature control switch :D

Thanks to Brian and all the others for your help again.
