How long ago was the belt changed, more important than mileage i guess in this case...
Shame, you find a decent car, then it goes pop

new engine time!

Jesus Ian, I know the feeling all to well. Gutted for you
The only way is to get it home and whip the cam cover off to see exactly what's going on in there.
If the belt has broken don't fit a new one and hope for the best, get the head off and make sure that everything is ok first. I had a mate who's belt had snapped, he fitted a new one and timed it up. When he started it it immediately went pop and smahsed a broken off valve head through the piston top and the cylinder head.
Better safe than sorry mate.
Hope the damage is minimal and you get her back on the road asap.
Cheers,
Iain T

hmmmmmmmm its got me thinking now as its been to the same dealership all its life" do u think i could even stand a chance of getting this done by the garage that done it in the first place!??
Its probably worth contacting them before you do anything to the car. If you can contact the previous owner (or whoever took the car to the dealer for the cambelt change) You MAY get lucky put some real pressure on them though. You might be able to squeeze something, if not get them to repair it.

Ian, all might not be lost yet
i've a mate that had a problem the same as that, i think it turned out to be the distributor or the coil was nothing serious in the end. was good for go in an hour or so. i will be talking to him in an hour or so and will post the exact cause.

wicked cheers for the backup lads ive just got in from messing about all day on it, ive stripped off the rocker cover and took a good look in the cambelt is ok phewwwwwwww........and cam and everythings moving round i havnt snapped any rockers or nothing, i have tested everything and at the moment it looks like the coil is not getting the right power we have 2 lots of 12v plus!!
atleast its not the cambelt ive just changed the dizzy cap and the rotor arm also as they were worn I now think its either the Toad Power key immobilizer OR the ECU thats causing the problem i seem to think its the ECU as the fuel pump isnt kikking in properly on ignition and its not getting the right power on the coil sounds coinsidental to me gonna try another ECU in the morning now been pulling me hair out all day lol To top it off i just got laid off this afternoon too

O well Life gos On!!

Sorry to hear about it but hopefully you have got off alot luckier than me! There was no visible damage in mine until I got the head off. Can you turn it over ok by hand?
Pity mine is off the road too as I could help out but you probably know more than me anyway. lol

ian
sounds like it droped a valve. you say you heard a bang so that sounds like the engine is damaged.
ian, have you had a job for more than 2 weeks? stop buying turds, you will save some money then.

ian,
the problem me mate had was just kike yours big bang and a cloud of smoke out the back pipe. when they had a look they foung a wire off from the plug under the inlet manifold. the big plug that is as far as i'm aware its tied into the coil. have a look sur its that then it's an easy fix.

The white one under the cover by the air filter bracket.
Common failure. ECUs ,on the other hand, are very reliable.
