I think you could get more grip on dry surface but they will wear faster in summer conditions and will not last much. The difference in summer and winter tiers is that winter ones have more natural rubber in they`re composition.

Yea I do mean for driving in the winter - would you just have massive oversteer from having grip at the back and none at the front?

You would more likely have understeer having more grip at the back! If im right in thinking winter tyre's will only workwell on snow and it aint like we get alot of that really

Unless they are actual snow tyres I don't think you'll notice a whole lot of difference.

We had a shed load of the stuff last season, and living in the bloody Alps so to speak , I would like to know what very cheap tyres I could fit on the rear,Im not going near a motorway or doing any sort of speed (my 525 does that !) and many moons ago I had a couple of "town and country " remoulds fitted to my MK 2 escort and they were spot on in snow.
Can you still get hold of tyres like these and for how much please ?

What I'm saying is that you can get winter rated tyres which look like normal tyres but have a slightly softer compound or you can get full on skinny and knobbly road tyres (optionally with studs if you're barking). I doubt you'll notice much difference in handling if you use the winter rated tyres on the back.

As I see it, winter rated tyres are for driving on really cold, but dry roads. I could be wrong but I don't think they're much use in the UK. What you really need is a spare set of bottletops with snowtyres.

I had a Mk 2 cortina gt estate many moons ago and fitted " mud and snow" tyres to some standard 4 inch rims on the rear . In snow it would go almost anywhere it was pointed , the problem was getting it to go where you wanted . Most of the steering was by the throttle and the hand brake stopped you quicker than the foot brake . But the sound of the twin 40s and the rooster tails of snow out the back put a very big smile in my face .

Great you could accelerate but not turn very good and most of your braking force is on the front so stopping would suck to

Winter tyres work well in the cold, not just snow. Summer tyres are too hard in cold weather, plus less tread.

Admittedly there is a bit of snow here, but they work in the cold too honest winkeye
