any tech 1 that has been driven through a puddle in the last 20 odd years will be a frightening and costly restoration,
this looks 'frilly' in all the right places so expect the worse

im a mug for tech 1s (sentimental value). i am thinking of purchasing it and attacking the rust in the next two years. in the mean time save money for the project and keep the car in dry storage.
is that a wise decision or should i just wait and buy one in better condition?

offer him 350 and show him under the carpets in the usual places, drivers foot well + other side, front of rear arches, whats the scuttle like?, the bottom of that center pillar looks gone.
Plenty of cutting, fabrication and welding, prepping and painting.
Then shake of the head and say its dangerous but it's crying out to be saved and tell him 300, make sure his mrs can hear and just wait till he's made eye contact with her.
Job done.
1500 if you are carefull and it'll be a peach but then there's the engine

new panels is definitely a must, hence the 2.5-3k being quoted. i do love the thought of having a car which is basically "new".gare30 wrote:more than likely there will be lots . but all panels are still available from dealer or hadrian87mtech27 wrote:gare30
the thing scaring me about this is the rust behind the skirts and rear bumper
it all comes down to how much hes willing to sell it and how much will power i have.
my problem is i aint a DIYer when it comes to cars and wont be able to do the body work my self.
yeah and thats the problem. i just brought my house (getting the keys on saturday) and will be financially squeezed for a while.gare30 wrote:then you will need deep pockets to get it right
my friends are telling me to let it slip
i might have to take their advice.

I'll lay money on that car being rotten.
It's been got at before around the rear arches. Take the boot trims out and my money on that you'll be able to check the tread depth of the rear tyre easier from there!
The fact the sills are scabby on that join tells me theres floorpan issues and theres no mention of scuttle or roof. Imagine what the sunroof trays like? Bottom of the front wings promotes a similar romour of what the base of the A posts are like as well.

thats a 4 grand motor £500 to buy it and 3+ grand to sort. I love tech1's far superior to the later cars in looks and drive but it's a brave man who buys that especially as its from north devon which is famously wet combined with coastal salt this makes it a rust hotspot.

Erm what a load of rubbish they have the early engine managment that most people cant wait to get rid of have lots of rot and they drive the same as a later e30 too!pnd wrote:thats a 4 grand motor £500 to buy it and 3+ grand to sort. I love tech1's far superior to the later cars in looks and drive

i beg to differ they are faster owing to significantly superior high compression engine are lighter and therefore faster and better to drive and have the superior bilstein shocks. Looks are subjective but i think the early car has the edge as it detracts less from the basic lines of the e30 and the rear spoiler is far preferable to the later one which looks ugly from some angles. And yes I have owned good examples of both.town325i wrote:Erm what a load of rubbish they have the early engine managment that most people cant wait to get rid of have lots of rot and they drive the same as a later e30 too!pnd wrote:thats a 4 grand motor £500 to buy it and 3+ grand to sort. maybe its time for a honda

Looks rotten to buggery. But anything can be saved with time, patience and a fat wallet. Needs to be properly inspected for the extent of the grot - I wouldn't hold out much hope though as it sounds like its had some repeated 'get it through the MoT' welding so it's more than likely horrid.
Sacrelige to say it would break well????

Thats not quite right both the high and low compression engines had the same power and roughly the same torque so if it is faster it wont be buy very much due to the restrictive early management.pnd wrote:i beg to differ they are faster owing to significantly superior high compression engine are lighter and therefore faster and better to drive and have the superior bilstein shocks. 25 year old bilstein shocks just dont cut it no more will they as in they have been on the car since new if it still has them on it!
You may of owned both but it does not mean you know anything about the cars my mom could of owed both but she wouldn't be able to tell the difference

As we have just passed the 70th? anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill's address on the Battle of Britain wouldn't it be correct to use his analogy of lives of the few to save the many?
One broken could mean a few are cherished a bit more.

I've owned both cars, late and early Sports. Very little to choose between them. The early engine managment can be problematic due to where the crank sensor is located (inside gearbox bellhousing). They're older, so therefore are more likley to be rotten.
The later car is slightly more refined and better insulated, a little stronger electronically, and tend to be slightly longer geared.
IMHO though, i think the early car is better looking, more classically restrained, though purposful. The bulbous bumpers of the tech 2 are a little too big and make the car look a bit... plump.
That said. I'd be more than happy to have either sat on my driveway.
From behind the wheel, a well sorted example of either will perform in an almost identical manner. The Tech 1 will probably feel a little more raw, and be a bit noisier.
At the end of the day, they're the best of the mainstream E30's, so either in good order will be a good find.
Buy on condition over all else..

still more than just a few good ones out there.
good E30's still turn up which are new to all, if not most on the zone.
take a certain lady's touring for example; a fairly rot free tech1 will pop its non-smilies
over the horizon with your name all over it.
though commendable wishing to save one, the cost to wallet, your emotions and the other half could turn love into something bitter.
for E30s and not the mrs.
