Its alive  (again :) )

Went fairly straight forward apart from me forgetting i had to swap the lives over from one side of the loom to the other where the battery's located

Worked flat out all day Saturday and the new lump was in by the time id finished, just had to sort the loom out  which i did today along with sorting the coolant pipes out, EWS swapping and other general bits to sort out.
Then turned the key, it roared into life after a few cranks, let it tick over for about 5 seconds then gave it a blip then switched it off, back up in the air and put the exhaust on winkeye

Dropped it to the floor, double checked everything then went out for a 'test drive' everything's fine and it runs so smooth with no funny noises apart from the alternator sounds a bit iffy but apart from that everything is good. Put your foot on the loud pedal and this thing turns into a lunatic after 5K, im very pleased 8)

Quick question though, whats this for?

Image

The plug to it is on the same line as the maf plug, ive pulled it off and blanked the pipe for now but what is it for?

Cant wait for the blast to work tomorrow 8)

Good to hear :D

That is the fuel tank vent valve, just vents the fuel vapour from the carbon canister to the throttle body if you have it plumbed in still.

(Should be in the bin) :)

Arrh,i see, ill leave it blocked off then :D

Started pulling the old lump apart tonight to see whats what with the head gasket issue.
once ive pulled the head off im pulling the crank out of it but will i need to undo that super tight 22mm bolt from the front of the crank to get it out?

if you do break it out a 3/4 inch gun and a vice will be enough to get it out and maybe a little heat :D

/\/\/\ This is the plan :)

Bit of an update, i set about the old engine to see why i was getting pressure in the system, removed the head and took some pics,

Cylinders 1 & 2

Cylinders 3 & 4

Cylinders 5 & 6, Check the iffy white fluffy bits in cylinder 6 :?

Still not sure whats gone wrong though although i did notice a couple of the head bolts near the back of the head came undone a bit too easy whereas the rest cracked undone.

No noticeable cracks anywhere in the block or the head

Any idea's?

Is that carbon staining around No2 combustion chamber or just oil? Check around the valve seats for cracks, the colour of the valves on 5 and 6 doesnt look too good, if the bolts felt loose the threads have probably pulled

No its just oil, im getting the head pressure tested next week to see if that throws up anything.

Havent got the head tested yet as i have more pressing matters to get on with, ie sorting the back box out
The one thats on is a custom back box but its for a 1.9 so im guessing its a bit restrictive with the b28 blasting through it, the plan was to use the 328i back box off the donor car but its a bit too long and hits the diff so i decided to chop some off and weld it back up, perfect fit, twin pipes and OEM 8)

I sized it up and started cutting (through 3 skins  )

Here's a pic of where its cut

Image

I was under the impression they were a conventional exhaust with two pipes in and two pipes out packed with wool, how wrong i was, check this out.

The standad compact 318ti exhaust is about 2 to 3 inches from the cat back surley thats enough for it to flow well its only the tail pipe that can restrict it

ooh, that's pretty mad :D

i guess my e36 m3 back box is similar? might explain why it's so quiet, and why theyre known for being heavy!

i'd be tempted to keep the silencer casing but make it a more normal exhaust through the middle of it. standard looks, good fit, better noise :D
cheers,

Thats why they are so heavy mate :)

You could do with something like this if you are going to build it yourself -

If i were you i would look for some perferated baffle tube. Join the to main pipes front to rear and pack with wool. It will sound a bit fruitier too

If you get stuck give me the size you need and i will get on to bozal once i am back of my holiday :D

After seeing all those bends etc the the standard box i think your right Mark it could be more restrictive than what ive got on now, from what i can gather all those pipes inside are to do with the 'flap' in one of the tail pipes so when the flap is shut its not suffocating the engine on the one pipe. the 328i box has twin 46mm OD pipes and the 318ti is 52mm single with none of the curly nonsense inside 8)

Dezzy thanks for the offer but the 328i back box will go to my scrap pile but not after ive opened it up a bit more, im curious to how it works, im not sure if there's wool in the other half as its blanked off ( you can just see the plate on the last pic) Ill update when the autopsy is done :)

Im not sure what to do now, Dan, i think that will be a bit on the loud side :D although yesterday i was at Himley hall classic car show and on one of the stalls a guy was selling Cherry bombs :D i was trying to imagine what an M52 would sound like with a pair of them on, bet its mental

Ive even been considering E30 boxes as they are twin pipes and 46mm 8)

Re-think time :|

ti box is no good, I bodged Kos's with the ti box to get it home and it was obvious there was a big power restriction, even though there are a load of bends and open pipes that 2.8 box will still have enough gas flow, its purely for noise reduction, with one smaller pipe ala ti box its restricted before it gets to the back box

Area of 52mm pipe section is 2122mm2

Total area of twin 46mm pipes section is 3322mm2

Thats more than a 50% increase

A single 3 inch pipe is 4298mm2

interesting.

does anyone know what the flap on the tail piece is actually for? further noise reduction? seems a bit odd.

i'm considering going single 3" pipe from the manifolds back on mine to keep the weight down.

i would advise against a cherrybomb BTW. if my m52 is anything to go by serious hearing loss will result......though you have an interior in yours which may help. :)

Its to keep the noise as low as possible at idle/cruising engine speeds, the only bad thing about 3 inch pipe is ground clearance by the RHD footwell and rear beam

it's pretty low already dan so i would have to do some measuring. its not as not as low as the sump or the PS cooler though. if i did the manifolds again (can't wait :( ) i could get them closer to the footwell.

off topic does anyone know why a pipe swager is so fecking expensive? £500 for a manual one, i looked for the diamond encrusted handle but came to the conclusion they are just robbing bastards.

Nickso, i had this Powerfail system on one of my E30's, 46mm twin pipes up to the centre box with single 70mm out, then 70mm pipe up to the back box

It used to catch where it went under the rear beam.

hmm, might bin that plan then.

i'll probably try to find an M3 exhaust and bodge it onto the downpipes.

If you did go single pipe you could 'flatten' the pipe where it goes under the beam.
