Ok, I thought that like the E30 the E34 guages would have the little copper nuts on the back, which could be tightened to cure an erratic fuel guage. However the following picture from an article about changing dashbulbs shows this isnt the case!

Basically my fuel guage on my 525 gets to the last quarter, then becomes extremely erratic, sometimes dropping right down to empty, as though the power is taken away from the guage, then coming back up after a few minutes, or the fuel light coming on when its not that low! If its not that, what else could it be? Is it likely to be an easy fix?

E34's are totally different with regards to instruments. There is a guide to replacing capacitors on www.e34.net which is the usual culprit of failing gauges on these cars.

Tbh mate when they get just below quarter of a tank the needle does tend to sink to the bottom, all the ones ive owned have done this. The best thing to go on is the petrol light...when that comes on you have 8 litres of fuel left 8)
