I don't have alot of knowledge about wiring head units, mine has suddenly stopped working, so I took it out to have a look and this is what I found. Is this bodged? If I get a new head unit will there be a lot of work involved?! :?

OK so I found 2 blown fuses among the mess of wiring in the dash. Replaced these and the headunit powered up! (woohoo).. then, something smelt funny, then smoke starting plooming from inside the head unit near where it plugs in and the plug got really hot, it was still working but I turned off immediatly. What now?!!

Is this a standard connection for a new head unit?

Yeah, thats a standard ISO connector. I don't think these came with the E30 so someone has fitted it. Going by the unexposed, twisted together wires I can see, I would be a bit worried about how it was fitted. Follow the wires from the plug and check how good the joins are.

ok cool. Yes its badly connected. At what point shall I start replacing all the wiring? All the speakers seem to be weirdly connected if you look at all the grey wires in the pic, it looks as though this connector is not even needed? Can it be bypassed?

best thing to do here is reconnect the wires yourself again, properly.

Remove the wires one by one and connect them properly and tape/shrink wrap them up.

Seems like wires my have been earthing causing the fuses/headunit to go off...

what a mess that is.
