Wiring
Using the M30 engine loom, some minor modifications are needed... Temp sensor - the brown temperature sensor on the M30 block will need swapping for an E30 (M20 only?) item.
Extend coil connection - you'll probably find the coil will need to move, & the 2 (non-HT) connections to it will need extending. Not a difficult job, & best left until you know exactly where you'll mount it & how long they need to be.

Facelift wiring mods (these apply to those with a facelift shell) - the engine will run without doing them, but for everything to function correctly, the following are needed;

To get the 'economy swingometer thingy' working you need to swap pins in the M30 loom:
Pin 3 (black and white) and pin 8 (black and purple).

To get the electric windows and sunroof to work with the doors shut and for the heater blower to work at all you need to connect the black and green wire from pin 15 on the E30 C101 to a small spade connector on the starter motor.

The wiring is fine, swapped the temp sensor, just need to swap the two wires for the econometer. And it has no electric windows. :D

Did you sort the prop out?

how far do the splines go in on that one in the pic, if they dont go in far enough it wont last long.

I was worried about that too, they are in about 20-30mm, not sure if that's good enough for that!? That prop doesn't fit very well anyway, the center bearing won't bolt in as it should.

I have used this combination but have made new centre bearing mounting holes just forward of the origonal ones, but I don't seem to have that amount of exposed splines, are you using a medium case diff? I am which may be why

Had a good raid around the scrappies at you pull it today, managed to get an e34 wasger bottle that'll fit and I picked up two huge fans from a Renault Saffrane, and another from a Saab 900, so I'll see what will fit best.

Also what thermo switch that goes into the rad do I need to pick up, and what from??

Well after almost another year, it's almost complete, just a few small things to do. Here's a couple of crappy phone pics for the moment, I'll get some better pics up on Monday with a video or two aswell.

To Do List...

1.Wire up rev counter. - What are the correct wires to connect for this or is it just trial and error??

2.Get MOT :D

About time :)

Did you swap the two wires over on the loom? iirc that controls the rev counter....

+1 on the prop specs 8)

Jp- Almost, cleaned the AFM and reset the valve clearances, cleaned the plugs and sorted a couple of air leeks. Almost sorted but still misses, will have a better look at the weekend. :)

Lee- nope I've not swapped the wires yet as I thought they only controlled the mpg gauge and the electric windows and fan, but as I'm not fussed about the mpg, I don't have leccy windows, and the fan works, I didn't bother. I thought It was to do with the white 3pin plug that is below the cluster, Square type plug??

The Spec is....
M10 box, clutch and flywheel
325 rear half of Prop
320 front half
M535i rad
Saab 9000 fan, butchered to fit, with e36 thermo switch and over ride switch on dash too.
Only thing is the temperature the switch operates at is a little high, I think around 90degrees, so the temp gauge is about the 1o'clock mark before it cuts in!?
