hello

i should make a decision to swap one of this engines in my E30
i have an s38b36 low milage and also a 2jz-gte from soarer and i dont know which one is better for swap

s38 is unique an engine built for race and expensive parts capable of doing +450 wrhp on stock internals and only 10 psi of boost

2jz is one of the best engines ever built
parts are cheap and r154 box is strong enough to handle the torque
2j is also capable of doing +450 with stock turbos and for sure need 17 18 psi and better octane to do 450 and more

2jz swap is easier and parts are cheaper and internal is strong for huge powers but an s38 with turbo also tempt me alot the space in e30 is very tight for s38 and making an exhaust headers for turbo is also very hard and there is no space for turbo

with all the limits that exit in the way of going turbo with s38
and easier swap for 2j i prefer s38 turbo because it makes me happier to see an s38 in my e30

what u guys think?
does s38 worth these hard work for swap or u prefer 2jz

thank for your reply to this topic

2jz with single turbo would be my choice.

If it has come from a Soarer it will be a 1JZ (unless it had a swap beforehand)

Nowt wrong with a 1JZ though

S38 would be my choice. Easy swap and great engine.

There're plenty of 1000hp S38 turbos on www.pure-pf.com if you want to check out ;)

May interest you to note that the 2JZ is a German engine developed by the Johann A. Krause Maschinenfabrik. This is why it mates to a 6-speed Getrag 233 gearbox, which the Japs simply renamed the V160.

Both the 1JZGTE and 2JZGTE are great engines, but the 2JZGTE is worth seeking out over a 1JZGTE, in my opinion, due to the added oil injectors under the pistons (to cool the piston crowns). The 2JZGTE was also a sequential turbo (compared to the parallel turbo of the 1JZGTE) and is thus more easily converted to a single turbo. Space for two turbo's in an E30 will be an issue.

It's a great pity though that the exhaust manifold isn't on the left side of the engine (like the 3SGTE) which can cause problems around the steering column on a RHD car. On a LHD car this is of course another matter. Still great engines though.

The 1JZ head is reported to have better flow characteristics than the 2JZ.

A couple of people in the soarer community have made what we call a 1.5JZ which is the 2jz bottom end with the 1jz head. There's a lad running one of these with a large single turbo and it's doing 600+bhp and that is before a god called Ryan G has mapped it.

The Nissan RB lumps have the exhaust on the other side don't they?

I'd go JZ over the RB lumps though, reported to be better behaved/ more reliable once you start going madf with the mods.

I would have no issues whatsoever junking a BMW mill in favour of something else hot.

I would really like to do a small block chevy transplant for a drag car.

Here's a thread about the 1.5JZ build, I think you should be able to view without registering

soarer also have 2jzgte with front oil pan
i have 3 of them :D
also i have rb26
i will take a lot of pictures from my garage soon i have 4g63 3sgte sr20 1jz m50 .... and...

2jz head has better flow
1.5jz is a dream
i saw a lot of flow charts from diffrent heads and 2j head flows better

back to the main idea
i dont want to build a dragester there for i am not looking for huge powers 450 whp is enough for me
i didnt find in any thread how much power does s38 takes on stock piston and rod
i want to buy only a thicker mls head gasket and studs and 10 psi of boost that makes 450 whp easily
i read from some where rods are weak and dont handle the boost
is it true?
if i could make 450 whp with stock internals i wont go for turbo

No soarers have 2JZ GTE

You can get the 2JZ GE in the soarer though.

Post 1996 Turbo soarers have the 1JZ with the single turbo and VVti

For your planned power I would forget the complications of what you are thinking, especially with the S38. For ~£4k a member called Gunni could supply you a rebuilt M50 with all the bits needed, including ECU etc. This will put you straight into your planned power output
