hi, i was having a general look around the engine bay and noticed tucked up behind the leads was a lead. So with tracing it back it shares the trunking for the camshaft sensor, its a 316i on a h plate, the numbers i found on it are bosch 0356914212, i was mainly what it is?? where if it does go anywhere??

Or is it the firing sensor off one of the sparkplugs?

That should be on one of the plug leads, but on a four cylinder engine I cannot say which one!
It works like a cam position sensor on a more modern engine, and tells the engine ECU which injectors to fire.

That's right, the hole in the sensor is H/T lead size, then it can read when that lead is firing it's plug.
I am unable to find out from my Haynes manual just which lead the sensor should be on,and at the moment both of my E30's have 'proper' engines!

Fairly sure it should be on lead 4.
Some muppet has probably fitted (almost certainly completely unnecessarily) aftermarket leads to your car at some time.
Best plan is to get a genuine set from a scrapper, or from one of the traders on here.
