My 318is has covered 145,000 miles and the tappets are showing there age. What sort of price do you think it will cost to have them replaced, plus what are your experiences of this matter.
Next, I know this is a bit far fetched but has anyone had a full engine rebuild and how much did it cost out there in E30 land.

You sure its the tappets making the noise?
Have you tried a new timing chain tensioner? about Ԛ£30 from the dealer.
Full engine rebuild..... depends on who does it, and to what extent your willing to go. Probably the wrong side of Ԛ£1000

My 318iS had a full engine rebuild including timing chain just before i bought her. I've got the reciept for Ԛ£1475 for all the work done.
Its a good rebuild, but the monkeys that did it re-used all the old gaskets (except head gasket) so i had leaks galore. So about 2 weeks ago, i done front cover gaskets, sump gaskets, rocker cover gaskets and seals and a new timing chain tensioner. She runs sweet as ever now.
When they done the rebuild, they also used the old tensioner, which is bad news.
Look into your cars history, to see if its had a timing chain, or a tensioner, or even both. If it hasnt had either, then you REALLY gonna need to do 'em, or you'll be saying hello to a few valves pushed through your rocker cover!!!
hope this helps

I hate to say it, but this does not sound like a good rebuild.stuartgallafant wrote:My 318iS had a full engine rebuild including timing chain just before i bought her. I've got the reciept for Ԛ£1475 for all the work done.
Its a good rebuild,
What did they actually do for their money?
Re-using old gaskets guarantees leaks and trouble. Glad you've decided to change the gaskets...
If in doubt, ALWAYS do the work yourself

they scrimped and re-used the rocker cover gaskets and seals, but other than that the engine is superb.
i do 99% of the work myself anyway. that way, i know it gets done thoroughly and properly

I thought you meant they reused all the old gaskets....
Rocker cover gaskets can be reused sometimes as they are rubber, but do harden over time and worth replacing after a few years anyway.
It took me a few attempts to trace all the oil leaks on my iS and fix them. Now it's 100% oil tight and clean !
