Guys, I need some information on body panel adhesives.
I've been advised on here that most of the joins on the roof skin (bar the pillars of course) can be bonded together using high strength adhesive. I've even heard of some products that are supposedly stronger then welds!?
Roof skin going on soon so want to have everything prepped and ready.
Any help or advise from body experts will be much appreciated.

Ye there are some good bonds out there, I think the best are epoxy bonds, Im sure they use this stuff on buildings nowadays instead of welding. See if this info helps.

Wow, lots of info on there. Any idea where specifically to look for epoxy compounds for automotive panel joining for example?jaymos wrote:Ye there are some good bonds out there, I think the best are epoxy bonds, Im sure they use this stuff on buildings nowadays instead of welding. I had my new rear quarters on my tech 1 bonded on, in an effort to prevent rust in the future. I can't remember what it was called but I know its the same spec as VAG use in factory. I need to speak to the bodyshop in the next couple of days so i'll ask them.

id look for 3M stuff first to be honest although BMW will supply the glue used for the bonding the chassis legs onto an E60 5 series. They are two pack jobbies and usually need a gun to get them out of the tube in equal quantities through special mixer nozzles. get some info on exactly how to use the one you buy as it may have to be applied to bare metal, reason being if you apply to a painted surface the joint will only be as strong as the bond between the metal and paint.
Thatcham and car manufacturers have put a lot of time and money into the development of these products and the crash results are good but i personally prefer a welded joint where possible particularly on a car that was designed around welded joints, using it down the gutters only on a roof wouldnt upset me mind.
just one point though, why arent you going to fit the quarter panels before the roof? that way you can fit them complete and only have one join to do which is the natural braized joint between the roof and quarter, joins can be prone to corrosion and since you cant often see the rear of them its difficult to see if they have been protected properly by waxoil.

No longer self employed but still available for welding duties.

Ive tiger sealed arches on before but I wouldnt recommend it
When I used to work at Renault we had a sealant that was used between spot welded panels, was pretty good stuff, basically, grind paint off the edges, run a bead of sealant then spot weld together. There are a lot of good prep/paint products that come with a renault badge

Thanks for the advice Matt. I've heard about 3M products and will do plenty of research before attempting any joins. I'm actually having a similar debate with my mate who is doing the bodywork - I like the idea of bonding joins for sealing purposes and if they are supposedly as strong as welds then it sounds like the one imo.
As for your point about the roof and rear quarters, to be honest I'm just going on what my mate is saying to do, though I will bring it up with him tomorrow.
Many thanks for your input Matt. Your old sport is part of my inspiration for my own project.
