Fingers crossed she stops smoking after a run. At least it isn't oil which is smoking (does not smell like burning oil), hope it's just a combination of a sooty old exhaust system from a car that was not running right and had been parked for 5+ years, plus the issue with the duff plug causing it to chuck unburnt mixture into the exhaust system.

It only does it once it has warmed up.

Excited and nervous at the same time :)

Well she's "on the road" :)

Got home but needed to take one of the cats to the vets, didn't fancy the 20 mile round trip down country lanes and into the middle of nowhere as an initial shakedown run incase anything went tits up, so took the golf.

Went to put a bit of squirt in her first though and didn't notice any smoke, hurrahh!

Got back and then it decided to totally pish down. Just been out for a quick run around part of the ring road. Was bloody nervous, on the alert for any noises or smells that shouldn't be there. Tracking needs doing that's for sure.

Gave it a quick squeeze in 3rd from about 45mph and it lit the rears up :)

Think I'll leave it for tonight now and jack it up tomorrow and get the other set of spacers fitted and just give everything another check over. Got a bit of a clunk at the front when doing speed humps (which need to be done with half the car on the hump and half off otherwise it will be goodbye exhaust)

There is a tiny blow in the exhaust, pin prick hole on one of the welds at the end of one of the downpipes, so it's farting a little bit.

Quite a strange feeling really. It's almost disappointing to have finished it (well it ain't finished but it drives) but I can remember feeling like this when I got the touring on the road as you are just waiting for something to go wrong. But I guess after about a week it will start to feel a bit more relaxing and i'll be a bit more "dialled in" with it.

Sincere thanks to everyone who has helped with this, be it parts, advice or actually getting stuck in. Dan and Dezzy, in particular.

Now it's time to enjoy mate. I am jealous.
Chuffed to bits it's done.

My bad on the manifold down pipe blow. I must have missed it. We will sort it though.

I hope it's nice tomorrow so you can get a proper feel for her.

Proper car you have built yourself there CR24v it's a lifestyle. :D

Well done Lee, and to all those who helped on your car :thumb:

Pleased to hear the smoke is dissapearing. I would suspect that you did indeed fill the pipes with a fair bit of soot with that duff plug on your 3rd cylinder. Shouldn't be too long and it'll all be gone.

Lee, top marks for getting the second edition on the road.
I think that if I'd put in the work you put in on the Touring, I would have seriously lost heart after bending it. Doing it all a second time, credit to you sir.

Cheers guys

Had a good one last night, went to pick the wife up at 11.30, so naturally took the beemer. Pulled up and switched it off, leaving the lights on as I was parked at the side of a main road waiting for her. She appeared and got in, went to start it and noting :P Poxy battery is obviously gash.

So her first trip in it involved helping to push the turd to bump start it :D

Using E30 iS gearbox and 3.91 LSD

Think my fuel pump has died :(

It always was a noisy cooont, just went out for a quick ride and it lurched on me a couple of times when setting off from roundabouts and exiting them, kind of like fuel starvation. Then it felt a bit down on power.

Got it home and had a quick look under the bonnet incase any wiring/ earths looked loose, nothing found. Then went to start it and no fuel pump priming. Now for the fun part, because my car was a carb POS in a previous light, there is no inspection cover above the passenger side rear seat! Meaning fuel tank out to change a pump :x

Before I waste a day fighting with that, what are the pins on the C101 i need to bridge to make the pump run, just to check it isn't an EWS issue.

I have a spare pump here in a box of bits, but no idea if it works

Pump is under the driver's side hatch,it's the second sender under the passenger side......
That's a day I've saved you.....
I lost a load of brownie points too, when the waterpump siezed and I had to hitch a lift home for the touring and a towrope, left the wife sat at the side of the Newark by-pass! :D

Thanks Malc, what a retard I am!

I've bridged terminals 30 & 87 on the 2 relays I have and no fuel pump activity, so I'm off to remove the inspection plate and investigate further

OK just been out and removed the inspection cover, gave the wires to the pump a jiggle and it fired up. With it running, if I mess with the wires going to the pump you can hear the pump stuttering a little. No obvious damage to the wires and the connector looks fine, but this is clearly where the problem seems to be.

The pump still sounds very noisy to me though.

Yep indeed, a few minor bugs to iron out, but the arse dyno is saying she feels quick. It's quite a surreal feeling having a torquey quick revving engine in a small light car, just picks up speed without even needing to provoke the loud pedal.

I fitted the 15mm spacers to the front this afternoon and put the 20mm ones on the back. I reckon it looks just right now.

Need to get my M3 eccentric lolipop bushes back from Dezzy and get them fitted, then get it taken for an alignment. The exhaust is a bit of a pain on speed humps, but comes with the territory I guess with a 55drop and 40 profile boots.

Anyway, here are a few pics I just took after fitting the spacers all round.

Two and half years on this project with, what was it? two different cars and at least two engines, plus another fragger car, and it's all come together in the end.

Well done Lee as the finished item looks great.

Jon, not sure yet, there is racing on both Sat and Sun this weekend, i tend to wait until nearer the time and see what the weather is supposed to be doing and pick the best day weather wise. Drop me a txt with your mobile and we can catch up nearer the time.

Billgates is usually there as his brother runs a hot beetle in air cooled class, they usually camp over.

I'll be there, look for the dodgy fat northerner.......er... hang on, that isn't going to work. :o

I'll be there both days, no doubt I'll bump into you if your running with a Viper, especially if Lee is about somewhere, E30 types have a very distinctive image (pikey) :o

Jon, I've just had a thought, are you on about coming to York Dragway or is TOTB on at Elvington?

Don't really ever see any Vipers at York yet there are always a good handful of them at TOTB
