I apologise for the description below - I'm doing my best. :)

I had a 1991 318i a year or so back; no ticking from the head - lovely; 106k miles.

Then the bottom end went on the motorway! I thought they were bombproof.

My mechanic took it apart and said this was why he thought it had happened.

There is an inner and outer 'sump'? Can't remember exactly how he described it, but if you take off the 'outer' sump casing there is another section which includes half of the oil take-up. He said that a few of the bolts from this inner section had worked loose (they were in the bottom of the sump proper when he took that off) and the seal on the oil take-up had opened slightly.....

So when the engine was working hard and the oil hot and thin, air was being sucked-up by the oil pump instead; well as you can imagine, unhappy things happened.

Anyway next time you do your oil change, and you have the time, it may be worth taking off the sump and checking the next layer of bolts.

I'll tell you why - I got a good replacement engine (with 98k allegedly) and my mechanic said before he'd fit it he'd check that inner 'sump'. He found the seal WAS still ok, but there WERE A FEW BOLTS IN THE SUMP PROPER.

I was reminded of this because I found the cylinder head and manifold in my garage today, taking up space. If any Zoner wants it, (and if you've read this far you deserve it!), you are welcome to it. I can't guarantee anything about it, but I did 3k miles before the bottom went, and it was very good.

I travel around from Gatwick to Worthing and a bit to the sides.

I couldn't find a note of this problem anywhere (on the internet) so perhaps I was just very VERY unlucky and it is very VERY rare

Oh no it's not!
I've seen it twice, once on my 318 daily runaround.
When you've drained the oil out of a M40, get a torch and have a look in the drain hole. The oil flowing out brings the loose bolts over towards the drain hole and you should be able to see them.
The two engines I've seen it on didn't suffer any ill effects, but I don't think it's recommended to have loose bolts rolling around inside your engine.

perhaps it's only a problem if the bolts that come loose are around the oil take-up, and so allows air into the oil pump if the seal there goes?

Not so long ago i had to replace my cam. looked like some one had attack it with a chain saw on the lobes! anyway, put the new one in with rockers and all the other gear and every now and then in would start up and tap really loud. after running the engine for a while this would slowly go away.
however, recently i crack the sump and when taking it off i found three bolts in there. they had come from the inner/upper sump. you can see that these bolts had gotten under the oil take up by the thread marks. i think the tapping could be something to do with the bad oil supply now as it hasn't done it since replacing the bolts.

not too sure wether the marks were caused by the bolts getting between the pick up and the sump when the engine heats up and cools down (expansion and contraction). or they got in the gap and then got crushed when the sump hit the floor (thanks mum!).

When i did my engine swap, Demlot removed my sump for me and we noticed the exact same thing dude. The engine ran sweet, but there was a load of bolts in the bottom of the sump, and not much oil.......wtf
