It did smell a bit rich earlier when warming up mate. Sure I've got the lambdas in the right way but will double check just to be sure. It certainly didn't feel in limp mode when I gave it some shove earlier (felt bloody quick)

Cheers for the info Steve.

I'll try and stop being a drama queen and get some rent in the screen and take it for a run out and see what happens. Kind of taken the edge off getting it almost finished :(

I'm waiting until 28th July before I will tax it, I'm not wasting nearly a month's worth of ticket.

I did have another blat around the block the other night, still smoking a bit, but a few prods of the pedal and it really takes off. I really do hope it ain't rings or some othe shite. One of the lambdas had loosened off and that was my suspected bust weld from clipping the downpipe, so good news there.

I'm going to check the other one is tight too, need to jack it up and I'm so sick of doing that, even more now that the trolley jack won't fit under the front rails now. Going to double check i have the lambdas plugged in right too.

Can't wait to drive it properly though. Need to get those spacers ordered for the rears, I need to try and keep this one out the scenery :)

Lee,your engine has been stood a while now,my M50 was perfek in it's donor,but a few months later needed a new blue sensor and a waterpump...have you fitted a new engine/body earth?Mine looked fine,but...

Hope this one does not take a liking to lamp-posts!

I have fitted a different earth, but perhaps not what was originally intended. My earth wire is an original piece that usually goes from the starter to alternator and it's connected from the driver side leg to the stud that the coil usually mounts to on the driver inner wing turret.

Maybe I should sort a better one out. My car didn't have the stud mounted right down on the chassis rail. I'll try that and the other things I've mentioned and then the temp sensor. Water pump was new before it was fitted to the touring.

For the touring I had an earth lead made up to go from the o/s engine mount straight to the battery neg.Cleared my issues, despite the existing earth lead testing OK!
Have you got the tacho/swingometer playing yet?

Just warmed it up a bit, smelt rich.

Pulled the plugs to see if any looked distinctly different, hoping to indicate a failed coil pack. It has a slight misfire when ticking over, can't really notice it under load much.

Anyway, here's the analysis.

Plug #1

Plug #2

Plug #3 - Look at the left electrode :?

Plug #4

Plug #5

Plug #6

Looking at the electrode on plug 3, that ain't right. Not sure if caused by me dropping the plug down the hole when fitting originally, but wouldn't explain how I didn't have the smoking problem before the crash. You can see it has been burning different to the other 5 plugs around the white part where it is scorched.

Reckon I'm going to be spawny enough to put this down to a shanted plug? :)

It's too late to go and buy any now, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow lunchtime. Hoping to get to the post office too and get some rent in the screen 8)

I thought about that but I'm nervous I may weaken it and then the bit snaps off, don't want that peppering the piston & valves etc.

Shouldn't be anything wrong, you only need a feeler guage and a flat screwdriver to do it.

Thats defo your problem, you cant gap those plugs anyway and they are only supposed to be fitted once as they have a crush washer, throw it in the bin and fit some new 8)

Dan. I really hope this is the problem. Man alive, I'll be able to go for a drive tomorrow night, all legal and without a cloud of shite behind me (fingers crossed)

sorry to go off topic Lee.

Dan there's no lambda , and it hunts a bit on tick-over ?

also the 'stretching spring' trick helped I think, the coil packs now have a bit of resistance

Well spotted Lee. That's definitely your problem. An electric discharge will always follow the path of least resistance, and will therefore arc across the shortest gap, which means that the spark would have been jumping from the centre to left electrode everytime. With a gap that small you'd most certainly have had incomplete combustion on your 3rd cylinder.

Great work BTW. Been following your project with interest for some time.

Regards
Geoff

Thanks Geoff :)

Gutted, just been to the post office and I can't tax it until Friday unless I want to pay 6 months tax for 5 months actual cover. Has to be the last 2 days of the month before they will tax it starting from the next month, wankers. The car is currently SORN (or at least I think it is as I never received a sorn notice after the V5 was transferred into my name)

Ordered my wheel spacers this morning, have gone for a 15mm set and I think I will put them on the front and the 20mm on the back.

So, off to buy some plugs after work and hopefully that will cure the smoking, fingers crossed!

The miserable snatch in the post office told me to come back Friday :(

Just changed out the plugs and had a few laps of the block, it is still smoking a bit. I reckon I've just got to give it a run now and hope for the best. The scorpion system howls like a mo-fo 8)
