I've been advised by a couple of zoners that etch primer is the best product to spray directly onto bare metal during repairs etc.. followed by other "build" primers and 2K paint.

My question is what is a good brand of etch primer to use? And where to buy?

Thanks

Just make sure you use a reputable brand mate, etch is etch it all does the same thing... IF you have never heard of the brand dont use it and make sure its suitable for 2k paint.

Okay, so who are known as a reputable brand? I've never used the stuff before you see. :o:

Halfords sell U-Pol stuff, which I think is well known. However someone else on here reckoned it wasn't a good product.

U-Pol is good fine. I think we use a Lechler one at work.

I don't want to seem pedantic, but read your post - it just doesn't make sense.

I've used acid 8 etch primer(u-pol) most of the time, works great, never had an issue with it
Only real men get it done with an M20

I picked up this stuff today. If I were to apply this followed by the U-pol high build primer, would this leave a surface that would be suitable for 2pack paint?

I only ask as it doesn't specify on the cans and iirc it says 1K on the acid primer.

Cheers

No and yes....

What are you painting? If its things that cant be seen and finish is of no real concern then yes...

If it is the cars body such as a door you might want to us a high build primer over the etch..... Read X-works thread in the stickys on chat part of this forum...

This will really be for parts that won't be seen at all. I just want a decent(ish) finish, but above all I want it to be as rust resistant as possible.

Well then it is fine to etch then paint directly over the etch... No need for a high build primer.. We only use the high build primer to fill in imperfections then it gets sanded smooth for final paint coat..

Only use high build primer on outer panels or repairs..

Okay so if I used U-pol acid etch (1k) followed by paint. Then after the the repairs have taken place, get a sh*t load of waxoil in there. :)

Looking for the best way to prime, paint and seal the metal frame work areas underneath where the new roof will go.

Hi, I'm doing the same job, so far I've ground as much rust as possible out, and treated the bare metal/remaining rust pitting - with Loctite rust remedy. On the front frame,( had to remove fan etc. in order to get at it). I'n not sure what's best primer to use; the etch wont work through the rust-remedy. I've heard Tri-flow is good for holding back rust. in unseen areas. Any further info appreciated.
If it ain't broke..
Fix it till it is :)

I found more rust today, hiding under the joint-sealer in both wheel arches. Oh ! The joy of it all

Zinc 182 primer is pretty good for pitted/damaged metal. Its good and thick, and as the name suggests, has a high zinc content.
Must be left to dry thoroughly before painting over.

That etch primer from Halfrauds is pretty good.
I bought a tin of etch primer from my local specialist, and it clogged up after a few sprays and was useless.
Halfrauds stuff, despite costing a fortune, is really good.
