I have a late 1990 325i sport that has been my every day transport for the last 16 years. Despite the miles it is in good nick and I've just replaced the engine with what should, and appears to be a sweet low milage fully rebuilt unit. My problem is that the alarm is working but making a high pitched squeaking noise when set or not. Using the key I can turn it off. When we switched the engine we disconnected the battery earth then reconnected and after spinning over for oil pressure started up. Is there a reset to correct the problem? Thanks for any advice. Kim.

A sport that you have run for 16 years?
That is dedication of the highest order and photos are required!
I have no idea what is wrong with your alarm, but working on the basis that it is original equipment, perhaps it is past it's sell by date?

It's a great car and I love it, also never had a ding which is why it is clean. I'll take a few pics if you would like to see them. I had a guy knock on my door recently wanting to buy the car, and I've been asked plenty of times by people out and about who want to buy it, even sitting at the traffic lights! Must be a classic in the waiting? The alarm is original, but was working fine until the battery was disconnected and reconnected 10 days or so later, so maybe there is a way for it to be reset. Hope so. Kim.

What's so strange about running an E30 for 16 years? If my red touring hadn't been killed two years ago, I would have been running that for nearly that length of time by now!
If this is the genuine period BMW alarm, there are rechargeable batteries in the siren unit under the bonnet, which have probably failed in the absence of main battery power.

Hi Just picked up on this thread.

My 1989 325iT has developed an alarm problem. When I unlock the doors the beep is now a tone! When locked/armed it's ok. Reading through some threads today it appears my rechargeable battery is on the blink. Can anyone direct me as to where it is located on the unit?

It is an original BMW alarm.

Many thanks.

The battery is inside the sounder with the key switch on it. Look through the replacement battery packs for things like non maintained emergency lights in the CPC catalogue.

Sure it's a BMW alarm? They were connected to flash the indicators.

I replaced the battery in mine last year but unfortunatly a couple of weeks ago it developed the same problem of emitting a constant tone when armed.
I just can't be bothered to figure out whats wrong with it yet, i'm hoping its something simple like a warning to say one of the doors/boot/bonnet is not closed so will just be a duff switch.

If yours is doing the same i'd say the battery is fine if it makes a noise then its retaing power.
Could be worth dissconecting the car battery just to be sure.
There is NO nucleus.
