turbo 'd M20 for drag racing
Moderator: martauto
hi,im after building a 2.5 M20 with big turbo for the use of drag racing,i have had a look through the engine builds on this forum, with some interesting ideas, but what i really need is some more info on serious power,so i am asking all of you on the e30zone if you guys have any links on guys that have built some serious horsepower M20 lumps, have come across a few films of M20 powered e30's on youtube, that run the sort of speed im am looking for around the 8.99 or lower quarter mile times,i am sure this well possible, thanks for reading,i will post pics of my e30 build ,i aready have the rear end ,wheels and tyres, roll cage tubing and box section for the rear frame,i am hoping to leave the front end as is,i may move the engine back 4-6 inches to get the wieght of the front.gearbox will be auto, more than likely a 2 speed powerglide, which i also have lying here ,that has been built for the job,and a 4500 stall convertor, thats it for now,i hope you guys can find or have links to help my engine project.
Your looking at about 1000hp. for a sub 9sec E30
People have been using M50 steel blocks and S50 steel blocks for that sort of power. Normally around 2.8liter or more. Port job, cams, pyramid rings, custom intake manifolds on the M50´s, Ultra good exhaust manifolds and tons of boost on the M50´s, not all that crazy on the S50´s.
In sweden they use E85 fuel, which I would recommend over here as well even if the e85 pump isn´t all to close. It still should be cheaper then race fuel. So 2000cc injectors would be the injector of choice. The ecu isn´t the crucial point but something with cam sync and preferably injection angle timing also to get idle nice would be a good idea. Vipec V-44 comes to mind, "4 downpipe and exhaust is a good idea and almost a requirement. Something like a Borg Warner S374 or 376 would be a good idea also, Then you have the normal stuff, rods, pistons, arp studs for the head and mains and caps, 2x Bosch 044 pumps is a minimum, and 10mm lines at least.
Your looking at the north side of 25k easily if to be done right, all in all for the engine side.
What exact details are you looking for ?

think 1000bhp is a bit much??i used to run an mk1 zephyr with 351 clevend,it ran a best of 9.43@ 143mph,that was a much heavier car and no where near 1000bhp,630 -650bhp at best, any way,the thing is i am going to use the m20 engine, things i need to know are, will the crank handle the power i need ?who makes better ones??
rods will be steel,i have set on order from australia
head work will be carried out by my friend, who has use of flow bench.
what other options on turbos do i have??
bosch pumps arent a problem either..
pipework for manifold i can do in stainless of course,
can you also recomend a waste gate, and who makes good intercoolers??

TD crank would seem an obv choice , gives 2.7 litres on stock 84mm bore
V8 would seem an obv choice other than than M20, LS series + turbos/SC probably lighter too, M20+ snails is a heavyweight for defo

It´s not that simple, rapid wrote:think 1000bhp is a bit much??i used to run an mk1 zephyr with 351 clevend,it ran a best of 9.43@ 143mph,that was a much heavier car and no where near 1000bhp,630 -650bhp at best, any way,the thing is i am going to use the m20 engine, things i need to know are, will the crank handle the power i need ?who makes better ones??

9.43 and sub 9´s is very far apart against 10.00 and 9.5sec for instance.
TD crank depending on the rpm´s your going to be using or a M50B28 crank would be better.
Large GT40´s are another option for turbos, your needing something that does 90lb/min or so.
Tial is a good wastegate manufacturer, I would think two 38mm for a split pulse setup would be nice or a single 60mm.
im well aware of the power needed to get sub 9's,im not going to get in a arguement over this, believe me i tryed so hard to get my old mk1 to go 9.20's,although i could of by using nos, anyways i have just been speeking to a mate who has a gt45 turbo, brand new in the box taking up space in his work shop, although i think this will be to big no??
thanks for your imput gunni...

ANT and GUNNI are regarded as GODS on this site for the work they do with M20 engines, I suggest you listen. Between them they have built more M20s then you have had dinners..
Gunni has built some serious turbo monsters do a search for some engines he has built.
Ant runs Atech
You have the two best experts here, these guys know there shit

Give them an ask on E30tech - there are some crazy times on there, admittedly none are as low as 9 seconds... The M5X engines seem to be favoured for the really crazy builds...
1. BMWSOB - 9.26 - m52b28 S - 36 psi - USA

It just seems to be the case with E30´s that they do need some serious power for sub 9´s. Especially if you run the E30 rear end and not a solid rear end or a 4link or something like that.
E30tech is the place for E30 turbo information. When I say 1000hp I mean that as a suggested goal so that your sub 9 goal also becomes a reality. You can do it with less power? Sure. But as the power goes down the level of build of the vehicle must go up considerably.
BMWSOB ran a ALL BMW setup for reach that 9.27sec time. So it can be done.
EDIT.
Just to note that I do suggest you take the development route and go with less power to begin with and see where that gets you. No reason to spend to much money if that can be avoided.
