Why are e36's so worthless

I'm in the market for some window switches, clear front indicators and clear indicator repeaters, but only if they're very cheap!
e36's are pretty much worthless because of the huge numbers that were churned out. The public en masse sat up and really noticed BMW near the end of the e30's life cycle, so naturally they were queueing up in droves to buy its replacement. The badge image coupled with the production numbers also have a lot to do with the amount of Hayez-Squad type owners of 15 year old e36's.
The design of the body was pish - think they lost their way with it tbh.

after the E30 the next great 3 series is the E46 M3 or 330i IMO

I actually think it was a pretty bold move, a radical rethink over the e30 and 34 that were the previous generation. Of course a poverty spec small wheel grey bumper one looks pish, but then so do all the modern bmws.
A decent e36 in the right colour still looks pretty modern. There's an estoril 4 door e46 that does the school run, an parked next to it, ignoring the plates, you'd never guess there is 8 years between it and mine.
Do people expect them to have carried on making the e30, totally unchanged, forever? Were they supposed to ignor aerodynamics and carry on with the least rear legroom in it's class?
E36s are cheap as tyre at their lowest point, most are just cheap old cars noone cares about, exactly where e30s were 5 or 6 years ago. Numbers will start to fall rapidly as they're worth so little, most will just be cubes, scent ones will start to be harder to find, and sought after by a few enthusiasts who see than as solid comfortable, reliable easy to repair runabouts.

I also thought it looked a bit bland, almost like the back end of the Ford Escort MkV at the time, when I was a teenager cycling about. Back then, me and my mate also despised the new Astra (Mk2, teardrop shape). Everything went a bit Mr Blobby styling-wise at that time!e30gazza wrote:I remember the 1st e36`s hitting the roads, and i thought, WHY? FFS,- after the e30, would you then want to build a taxi!

the chief designer for the E36 phoned the design in and had to leave a message in an answerphone.Blitz wrote:How bland is this

e30s were pretty much cheap run abouts at one point, in 2004 when i was just a young un and i frist got into e30s my local scrap yard had at least 6-7 at any one time. at this time chromies were undesirable (how things change) you could easily get a decent 4 pot pre facelift for under £500 with plenty of T&T.
just how it goes, once something gets rare people like and want something, or is it the wierdos who have always like them standing out now there is non left

E36 M3 is the best value sports car around IMO.
I plan to get one in the next wee while as prices are rock bottom. They look pretty good in that trim also. Not a patch on an E30 M3 in the looks department though.

I had an e36 318is a few years ago, it was very comfortable, but seemed heavy bad on fuel and handled crap, the rear suspension seemed to not allow the rear out like the e30 and it liked to under steer.
Then when it over steered it really let go, or may be that was just my driving and stretched tyres.
All i know is the e30 is a lot more fun, handles and looks better and accelerates faster. Plus the seats are better and the driving position.

I think the E36 evos are quite affordable beasts.....would much rather have one than an E46 M3. I really think E46 M3 was a step down, definately not faster than an Evo and sometimes pretty naff.Cypriotgeeza wrote:+1!johnt0709 wrote:The design of the body was pish - think they lost their way with it tbh.

Obviously nowhere near the E30 M3, but there is a big difference in price.
Some of the pics uploaded are specifically "ugly" ones. There are some very nice ones out there believe it or not.

agreed that the had to move on, but step back 20 years and compare how far modern the e36 was over the e30. the e30 looked positively dated. its a quiter smoother ride. better handling and ballance, safety etc which is what the marked demanded. better aerodynamics and fuel efficientCypriotgeeza wrote:obviously they couldnt keep making the same car over and over again..just looks like they lost a little passion along the way..Kos wrote:if bmw kept making the e30 they wouldnt be where they are today

most e36's you see today are rubbish but a nice one still looks fresh and certainly doesnt look 20 years old

All E36's and the disgusting 'compact' turd should be sent to china for scrap,
I am sure this is an era that BMW would rather forget....
I was actually interested in that but I'd have to sell my CTR first... And I'm really lazy.dips346 wrote:no one is buying at the moment ,i have a high spec ,mint 328 sport for cheap money and same thing ,no one has even phoned
I don't know why everyone hates the E36 so much, give it 5/10 years and everyone will be bumming the rare models just like the E30.
Although when i first saw an E36 i thought omg what have they done!
After driving a friends one i liked the way they drove and was very roomy inside compaired to the E30 ( good for a family) then took the plunj myself and brought this.

(crap pic i know)
Loved every minnet of it.
Now it`s going in the E30

Because people are too stupid to realise that the e36 was better in every measurable way than the e30, but don't like them because they're not 'cool'
It was both a massive sales success, and widely regarded as the best drivers car in it's class, yet some peoples e30 blinkers are so firmly fixed they don't understand progress.

^^ totally agree
the shape might need to that nice to a e30 but amazing how the e36 engine, steering rack, rad, seats, dash, window switchs and suspension/brakes end up on the e30s ?? cant be that bad of a car for us to use the bits on the e30
