It could be done - although I dont know why
You would need the RWD bellhousing conversion thats used for the Mk1, Mk2 Escort and Westfields etc, but I think that would leave you needing a Ford gearbox
Engine mounts would be custom jobs, but not that difficult and then plumbing and wiring.
If you wanted to go for the LET engine, you would have problems with the exhaust manifold and steering column. TBH, it would be easier to go the Cosworth route as they already run RWD.

Not sure that's true as the exhaust exits on the passenger side of the nissan engine

Yeah, good point. Was looking at it the wrong way round
Thinking about it, if I was (God forbid) going to fit a Vaux engine to an E30, I would go for one of the newer V6 motors like has been used in some Westfields - much nicer sounding than a 4pot.

Yeah but a V6 and thus inferior to an inline 6!
Think all you'd gain from a V6 is the weight being further back.

i think itd be a good idea, apart from the M engines, bmw engines arent exactly the best to work with i dont think, sure you can do all sorts of conversions like turbochargers superchargers etc,
but a c20let is good cheap power, do it and have a damn quick bmw.

XE and LET have been used in mk2 escorts etc as mentioned also opel manta`s as well both are rwd so i guess it can be done.
tbh in a bimmer i would rather keep to same make engine but each to his own

The C20 LET is the 2.0ltr 16v Turbo found in the Calibra and Cav 4x4 Turbo. It can make good and reliable power with the right mods.Toby_Unna wrote:um what engine is that?
just curious. am happy to say the only vauxhall engine code i know is XE
Ive seen a few 300bhp Mk3 Astras and Novas with the LET, but that seems to be the most bhp the Vaux boys go for, probably something to do with FWD

I havent seen it around but there is meant to be a 350bhp rear engined RWD LET Nova somewhere near me. Thats probably a laugh to drive

me too dont get me wrong, but if my engine packs in (318is) i'm in for some heavy cost, i dont want to go the vauxhall route, i was just wondering wether it can or has been done (vauxhall engines are quite cheap and easy to source - not sure about all the other parts or even where to start - bellhousings, gearboxes, driveshafts, mounts - the rest is pretty straightforward i guess)
c20xe NA would be good too, just the turbo could be fun on the LET

C20LET conversions are for the novas not e30's

Sounds like a fantastic idea. I prefer the idea of fitting a Nissan SR20DET engine and gearbox from a 200sx.. It's already longditudinal and all set up for RWD. Cheap, plentiful(ish) and makes loads of good power. Plus, being jap, it has the turbo on thr 'right' side.
Cool.. I like the idea of fitting the audi s3/tt 1.8 turbo too.. Would have the same clearence and bellhousing issuse though.

i think i sussed what you need, opel manta parts basically - gearbox, prop and sump - rest is fabrication - doesnt seem so hard either,

im using a xe in my caterham. with a adapter bellhousing, quaife s/c box and custom prop. carb make thing very simple
i rebuilt it last year and it now pushing 220bhp and it revs like a 2 stoke bike. it would spin the wheels at 100mph in my nova
it came out of!
go for it but weight is important in a fast revving 16valver, cant carry passengers
