ECP say its a 320, but then its says mine is a 325 and its not its a 2.7 also, i guess its best to declare things with DVLA and the insurance company to have it all up dated especially if your going to stick a 2.7 badge on its ass ... Glad i have done a build diary and kept the reciepts. How many people declare the work done ? 1%

It will always be a 320i, you can't change that. An Escort that's been fitted with a Mondeo 2.0 engine is still an Escort, isn't it?spic wrote:ECP say its a 320, but then its says mine is a 325 and its not its a 2.7 also, i guess its best to declare things with DVLA and the insurance company to have it all up dated especially if your going to stick a 2.7 badge on its ass ... If you can get DVLA to change the engine size on the V5 to 2494cc or whatever it is now and also put the new engine number on the V5 without them asking loads of questions and demanding confirmation that the work was done by a bona-fide garage you've done well.
I know of at least one person here who spent months trying to convince DVLA that his engine existed. IIRC, they didn't even want to believe a confirmation letter of provenence from BMWGB themselves.
BTW, according to ECP's system my E30 320i touring is an E36 320i convertible!

Right a few updates since my last post.
I found a stamp on the side of the block it has 2.5l then 2.7l under it
What does this mean?
Its been on the rolling road now
The only problem the car had on its runs was at the very top it misfired

Are you sure it's on the block, and not on the head?afcbob wrote: I found a stamp on the side of the block it has 2.5l then 2.7l under it

If it's an 885 head, then it will have a small section on it with 2.5 on it. some also have 2.7 just under the 2.5 casting.

that is a late cat prepped 2.5 engine placed in that car no worries but a late cat prepped engine never really makes the claimed 171 bhp prob makes around 150-165 bhp on a good day

So if its the 885 'head then does this mean it has to at lest be the 2.5 engine thats in it.
What other info do i need to still find out?
Each step is getting closer.

Cliffybabes 2.7 eta based motor has also seen rollers and the results were posted here on the zone.Alex wrote:It was a guesstimation, i was looking into having a bash at building one a while ago.StuBeeDoo wrote:I get the impression that there is a lot of "guesstimation" about 2.7 power outputs. The only eta2.7 I'm aware of seeing a dyno sheet for is Daimlerman's. That one made 178bhp and had peak torque of over 190.Alex wrote:a well sorted 2.7 should make 200bhp but it all depends what conversion it is, an eta conversion using a 320i head may only produce that of a 2.5 but with more torque
Also, there are a lot of variables in the way people choose to build their engines. For instance; my old 2.7 had head work (325i valves and ports to 325i size/shape) and allegedly made 213bhp with a BTB manifold and Cat273 cam. I never saw any dyno plots for it, though.
In a few weeks, I'll post figures for my new one, once it's run-in and been remapped.
It's been built for torque rather than top-end, balls-out, power - basically it's a 2.7 bottom-end and 2.0 top-end with a 325i cam and a very light flywheel.

for more power you need to make the right choices when choosing modifications.
In my humble opinion iwould recommend
6 branch manifold and stainless exhaust system
chip and some other subitle mods
if you require more info drop me a PM i have sources for all the parts you will require for the m20B25
does look like a tidy motor
Cheers
Ben

piston stroke !!!! TBH with those power figures its got to be a really pony 2.7 !!!
trust a good etaz based 2.7 will make 180-190 bhp and similar
a properly built 2.7 will make over 200bhp have seen 2.7 make 225bhp-235bhp.
that motor is a bog stock 2.5 fella !!!!

Correct me if I am wrong but that is not a 325i inlet manifold thats the smaller 320 323 or eta manifold.. Kinda hard angle to tell, Can you take a pic from the top? If that is the smaller manifold this will be your problem in making power as the ports are so much smaller then the 325i ones, not to mention it will more then likley have the small throttle body on it..
I suspect you might have a eta bottom end with a 885 head but eta inlet and throttle.

Yes heaps better.... Its a 325i manifold so all good there..
From here mate the only thing you can do is whip off the sump... If you choose to do this get yourself a new oil pump while your down there.

Not true, BDC cylinder 1, Spark plug out of cylinder 1, welding wire down the hole, measure. Then TDC C1, measure again, one from the other gives the stroke.m_jermyn wrote:Yes heaps better.... Its a 325i manifold so all good there..

Good idea.. You would have to compare your findings with a known 325i for reference

Well not really: 75mm 2.0L or 2.5L, 81mm 2.7L (no over bore).m_jermyn wrote:Good idea.. You would have to compare your findings with a known 325i for reference
Since we know its either a 2.5 or 2.7, we only need to know if the stroke is 75mm or 81mm.
Its unlikey to be a 2.0L with 2.5L throttle body, intlet manifold and head. More than likely I expect this is only a 2.5L in need of a good service given its power output.

But your not measuring from the top of the block you will be measuring from the head.

So, it doesn't matter where you measure from. As long as you measure from the same point on both TDC and BDC measurements the stroke will be the same once you subtract BDC from TDC.
