A manual E34 as a daily? No thanks, especially not a 540 burning petrol

Convert it to gas and it might be just about tolerable, but even then being such a big car id want it auto, the later V8's are much better

sod the v8 issue, its lovely manual or not. i would be more concerned about the gearbox going pop at 250k miles.

What a car for next to nothing! Juice wise 20-25mpg isn't that sore imho! The mileage would put all but the brave off though! Oh and if any ones thinking of making a cheeky offer, read up on the infamous nikasil issues first.

That's been a heck of a long way. A bit of fun to run into the ground I imagine. They are rare - less than 200 manual 540s sold in GB iirc. If it doesn't burn oil it might have a fair bit of life in it, but I bet it feels well worn everywhere after that sort of use, and not worth spending on to make it any better.

You think you will be able to pootle around tickling the throttle of a 540i? Thats the only way the mpg will remain similar, I know I wouldnt :D

easy way to tell if the bores have corroded with the engine stone cold leave the drivers door open and start her up if the door bounces up and down walk away if its steady then all should be ok

on a 250k car anything could make a door rattle. not very accurate i feel.

for those moaning about MPG, yeh its not great. the 6th gear certainly helps on long journeys but around town it can become tiresome block changing all time even though its easy to do with all that torque. i got over 30 on a long run once, around town it could do 20+ if you were easy on it, a normal drive was closer to 16-18 though. nikasil is probably not even worth worrying about now IMO.

mine had done 186k and everything was tight as a drum in the cabin. the only issues were the infamous 60mph shimmy. wasn't even any rust and thats fecking rare up here.

you must drive at 70 or under on the motorway then, TBH that was on the few times I tested it before converting to gas, I did 190 miles this morning on propane, 50/50 A roads and motorway which came to £20.86 :D

Normally I tend to hover around 70 / 80,

Perhaps I've been lucky, was once told if I got rid of the mahoosive wheels it would be even better !!

The bigger the rolling radius the lower the engine has to rev = better mpg

Mine has 255/40/17 on the rear, auto box isnt good for economy though

Funnily enough that's what mines got at the back with 225, 45's on the front, must be my manual box helping,

If I weren't getting rid soon though, that gas conversion sounds nice !

I've had an E34 530 V8 Auto - stuck in sports mode and managed to get 33mpg on a run!

I'd have a decent 540 E34 manual any day rather than an E39, as you'll get equal economy to a 3 litre but lots more grunt - like the E32 730 (which I've had) compared to the 740.

It's a Baby M5, but remember the V8 parts are a lot more expensive :? still wouldn't say no :D
Previously owned loads of old E30s, E34s, a few E36s, E32s, E39s and an E38.

Currently in a diesel Audi - miss me old E30's....
