dosn't seem bad at all to me, quite a few parts needed gaskets, timing belt, head bolts plus other stuff. And it will take a good few hours labour

Do the water pump while your there is the car is a keeper, they are not too expensive

The heads on these are prone to cracking in the cam bearing journals.
If it is the 2.5, then before anyone dismantles anything, get the cooling system up to pressure and take the rocker cover off.
Carefully watch the rear two cam bearings for little drops of water emerging.
Be carefull the rocker shaft lock plate at the front of the engine doesn't work loose while doing this.
could do it your self for less....
personaly id take the head off, have it machined polished, ported, skimmed and preasure tested for Ԛ£250 and spend the Ԛ£100 on parts for the head gasket replacement.

At least make sure any mechanic who looks at it is aware that these heads commonly crack ib the cam bearings.shane320i wrote:

shane, how far are you from hastings? our local specialist did mine for about Ԛ£250 all in. the owner worked for BMW for years so knows his stuff...

Im on the other side of Brighton mate so its gonna be a bit of a drive.Its still drivable tho but i have to keep toping up the coolant every few miles.
