legal exhaust noise limit..
Moderator: martauto
right its not really related to a E30 but it does affect them.. what is the legal limit? my wee brother got stopped at 8 in the morning at the bottom of his street.. the boys in blue were waiting on him coming. they have told him its illegal but had no test gear with them and truth be it Ive heard louder E30's and owned louder E30's than my wee brothers 200sx so what is the legal limit??

There was a thread on this a while ago, TBH I dont think there even is a limit as such, just some police forces seem to think they can go round with a meter and hand out fines to anything that goes above a limit THEY decide upon

Surely they need the test gear to say anything.
What have they said he has to do James?
Must have been a complaint made?
Can't catch anyone worthwhile so they bother the motorist. As per usual!

Couple of years old but same old, there is no legal db limit for cars, they can only slap you with asbo or construction & use crap if they really really want to be arsey, if its a standard looking exhaust though you shouldnt have any problems

It's just like having your music on too loud, shouting your mouth off, honking your horn late at night etc. If you create a lot of noise then it's seen as public disturbance. Tbh if i was on nights and someone came past at 8 oclock every morning making a racket then id see my bum

when they pulled him they did say there had been a complaint. we know who it is.. not someone on nights!! its a lass around the corner that doesn't work but sits up all night drinking then wants to sleep all day.
they said they'll be coming back on Monday to test the car and did mention that they needed VOSA to test the car..
Greg has been pulled in by VOSA before and they went over it from bumper to bumper and made a comment on how good the car is maintained!!!
Greg works in a garage and if the car needs the car gets..
In that case, get a louder pipe onjbh wrote:its a lass around the corner that doesn't work but sits up all night drinking then wants to sleep all day.Dezzy wrote:Surely they need the test gear to say anything.

we had VOSA show up one night at our local car club meet, the VOSA guy tried to say that my mates IBIZA GTi was to loud, we questioned him as to how he thought it was to loud and all he said was "i have a trained ear" to which we all had a good laugh at
he also say's VOSA don't use db meters very much as it would be to costly to supply every inspector with one and that they need calibrated fairly frequently
we never really got a proper answer from him & the traffic cops that were escorting him about had a word with him and told him "not to slap any VOSA defect orders on any of the cars in our club"

get to a track day and ask them to mesure it for you at idle and 3000rpm. you'll get some figures that way and if its ok for a track day. if its ok for a track day then you're fine on the road.jbh wrote:do you know any one with the meter to test how loud it is now weve changed the cat?

in the mot testing guide theres a failure item;
"exhaust is unreasonably noisy when compared with a similar vehicle with a standard exhaust system in reasonable condition." the advisory is "exhaust noisy". ive never failed a noisy exhaust but have used the advisory a few times (mostly to cover my ass from vosa).
vosa man wont need a meter as theres no set limit figure. all he needs is his ears and his opinion.
