right then folks i've got the chance of getting my hands on a m20b25 & i'm looking at rebuilding the bottom end (allready got a rebuilt top end) & i'm trying to find out where the best place to buy the big end bearings & piston rings would be & how much.

also any idea as to the cost of getting the barrels honed?

thanks in advance for any help/advise.

My M20 bottom-end is currently with the reconditioners.
I'll let you know the final price when I get it back. Hopefully later this week.
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

its the over sizes bearing thats the killer i think the mains where like 80 quid and the little ends where about 50 or 60 and the regrind was about 100

OK, I took my bottom-end to the local reconditioners still assembled and told them to get on with it.
They washed it, stripped it and checked all the tollerences.
The bores were honed, new standard size rings fitted. The mains checked and put back as they were fine. The big ends were polished and new shells fitted.
Then it was reassembled with new crank and idler shaft seals.
Total cost £440:36. I got a new oil pump and sump gasket from BMW and IIRC they came to about £150.
So, mine was near-as-dammit £600.

Look at it this way;
£440ish was the total, presumably including VaT.
Rings,inc VaT would be £125,so a labour cost of about £315,the strip,clean,check and re-assembly would take 8-10 hours,or a labour rate of £30-£40ph,not too bad,really.
Just shows, though, what could be saved by a bit of DiY!

M20 is a lovely, logical engine to strip and re-build.Very difficult to get things wrong with it.

..... And the full engine rebuild worked-out at £1700. 8O
Head cleaned-up and refaced/rebuilt. New BMW head set.
New BMW cam, rockers and shafts
Plus the bottom-end and getting the flywheel faced.

Would that I had the space (even a small bench) to do stuff like lapping-in valves, etc, etc.
I have to pay to have stuff like that done because I can't be arsed to do it sitting on any empty space I can find on the garage floor. Come to that, a garage with mains electricty would be nice.
To say that it's galling to have to pay someone to do stuff that I'm capable of doing myself is an understatement.

But in reality, a house with a double garage would be 270K here, at least £15k for the extra garage, so that's a few engine rebuilds straight away!

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?
