Things have slowed up over since the new year due to my wife being injured and on crutches and daughter having a slight accident. But I'm still grabbing an hour in the garage whenever I can. Diffs now ready to be assembled fully but I just want to try and Passivate the diff cover bolts before final asembly.
New Z3M bush is in. I ended up using the original diff cover as I priced up a Z3m bush and it came up at £25.90 against the £70 for a replacement Z3 2.8 cover and bush. I just couldn't warrant the extra and fancied the "m" bush so ended up refinishing the backplate. They tarnish really quick in raw alloy as well. This should last a bit longer.

Note the new Seal guards just to neaten it all up.

Next up I need to tackle the rear beam / get Barry to press the new bushes in and titivate the rear arms. I also need to get over to the car and finish getting the tank out and then I can fit the new front to rear pipe. I ordered the fuel breather that Dan quoted above anf the correct long one has arrived. Well pleased (thanks for the info Dan).

looks good!
i'm thinking of doing a [S] template for LSD rebuilds too
the new seal covers and speedo sensor fixing plate make such a difference, nice and cheap too
the seal covers keep coming in looking fairly naff though, looks like they've got damp in storage
i never fail to be amazed at just how much rust is hiding behind the speedo sensor fixing plate!

Spent a couple of hours this afternoon in the garage playing with Chemicals
My new Zinc plating and passivating kit arrived
Heres the results:
The speedo sensor plate is original BMW passivated finish. the rest is from my kit.

Spent most of the day with the plating kit fired up. All a bit boring really but I thought it best to get it out of the way.
All the bolts for the rear end are now ready for the reassembly.

Heres what annoys me the most about BMW new parts. Just raw mild steel!! Thats just going to look REEEALY nice afer just a few weeks!!!!

So I plated those as well.

Rear beam bushes are fitted thanks to Barrys tool
, Diff is fully assembled awaiting oil. Just need to get back over to the car, whip the tank out so I can tackle the front to rear lines, and it's ready to go back together.
Oh and the trailing arm bushes are being replaced but i ain't looking forward to that job!

Well, it seems like an absolout age since I've worked on this project. The wife has been ill since January, added to work and other things, poor old shed has taken a back seat in Trev's priorities.
So today I made a concerted effort on the old bus to try to rally some enthusiasm. Have to say it's wained a touch and today didn't help. All I had to do was drop the tank out and remove the front to rear lines! Easy? Like F**K
Those stupid screws that hold the pipe retainers to the floor pan? Sheared four off plush
Speaking to Si and the only way out is to grind them flush, drill the hole out and put a small 8mm bolt through with a nut to secure. Which means the passengers side of the interiors gotta come out! Unless anyone else has any bright ideas
This shot shows how shot the pipes were
. The brake line was absoloutely rotten and is distinctly weak

Had a little clean up under there once it was finally totally stripped out and I have to say, Apart from three or four bubbles in the underseal, it's completely rot free. It came up fairly well, I'm after OEM here and originality so it won't be seeing the spray gun. It'll go back now with the floorpans like this? Shame the last pleb owner like black waxoil. What hideous stuff it is. You can see where he's half heartedly gone over the entire car.

And finally, how original do you want an inner arch

More soon. I now have everything back at my gaff for cleaning and painting. And then it'll go back together.

Those fuel pipe clips are stupidity aren't they.
Are you going to buy OEM brake pipes? I have always found them a coooont to bend, even with a small pipe bender, so used copper.

Already have them all from BMW hanging in the garage. Not looking forward to bending them TBO. I've managed to keep the old brake line as it should be, withouth bending it, so it'll be a good reference point.E30BeemerLad wrote:Those fuel pipe clips are stupidity aren't they.

A bit anal I know but they come in black now, not the green! However, in the boot of the red breaker Si and I had, were two brand new pipes that run along the rear arms, in green. Thjose are the ones that really show so that was a right bonus.

Just a thought Trev, could you drill out the sheared bit and put a Rivnut in there.

I feel your pain mate. I just renewed my fuel lines and clips front to rear and the only retaining screw that didn't sheer off was the one tucked up in the engine bay

Cheers. Mmmmm, they'd be brazed to the floor then
Not sure I want to take a welding torch to it. But what I could do is, if they are threaded the complete length, I could remove the existing ones, drill a hole exactly the same size as the screws thread, and shorten the screws (I have spares on the ones I removed). Then screw through the floorpan to secure the rivet (after dilling a hole in the base of the rivet) while leaving enough room underneath to scew the pretainer plate on.
I'll report back. Thanks Danny.

There are some really top quality bonding agents/adhesives out there now, you could fix these in with some epoxy type stuff IMO

i was asked if i minded this being used instead of welding.
So this could be the way forward

there are no threads in these rivets/slugs but you could tap them . i think i would drill a hole in the floor tap the rivet tighten the clamp and then smear a little bonding over the top then some seam sealer and never take them off again

Got some more done today. Basically the fuel tank looked a mess. It had slight bubbling around the lip and again, there was black waxoil all over it. This should be the last part of the car now cleaned of it I think. I bloody hope so. The stuffs a pain in the arse.
Anyones whos ever worked on the fuel tank on one of these will know what a cumbersome lump it is. So hows easiest to work on it?
Like this! 4 long lengths of stuudding
. Happy days

Heres what the tank was like. Shit isn't it!

And heres how it cleaned up. Good enough to use but I had to scurf back the edges which meant it's need painting.

Heres it's prepped ready for paint

With the edges scurfed back

And heres it painted. It's far from perfect but it's under the car and I'm not after concours here, just for the odd "oooh" and "ahhhh" when it's up on the ramp
.

Heres the beam painted up. Not as nice as a powdercoat finish but as above really. I just want to drive the damn thing!!!!!

The Fuel filler neck was really in good shape so just a flash of with the sporting life and a coat of anti chip to pretty it up.

The gaurds in front of the fuel tank are good enough to go again after a clean

And the fuel breather cover from within the offside rear arch after the same treatment as the neck.

Overall a long day but a fruitful one. just the rear arms to refurb now and it's ready to start going back together

That lot looks good Trevski. I was in the same boat as you, i.e. I'm not a concourse bummer so "it'll do" was my ethos when giving things a freshen up. Fuel tank looks better than a new one.
