strut specs

a quick one which could save me alot of hassle how many types of strut were fitted to e30s and whats the differance between them i know about one being 45mm thick and 51mm thick but the thing that i am interested in is height ie were some taller or shorter than others and if there is any marks signs which could help me otherwise it means i have to strip out all the front end any help thanks in advance
