Just done a cambelt change on a 323i year 1985. I folowed the guides exactly and done the four revolution test at the end and im preaty sure the TDC was spot on, not moved at all. When i started the engine seems that the timing is out, posible not all the cylinders runing, it revs at about 300rpm on idle and when i hit the gas dose not pass 1000 rpm. This is the engine with the distributor on the side. Any thoughts please, thank you

What guide did you follow? The 323 needs the third belt pulley timed up as well as the crank pulley and the cam pulley.

The 325 one, i now remember that i moved the third one by mistake. Dose the third one turns the distributor? And in order to time it i do i need to start again and time it with the distributor cap off?

If it runs, you can't be far out, so you can correct it by turning the distributor. IIRC (from at least twenty years ago!), there's a mark on the distributor body that should line up with a mark on the rotor arm.

I have tried to move the distributor clockwise with no luck it seems welded in to the block

There's a clamp that has to be loosened first.

Is it the one with a 13mm bolt on?

I had the same problem ,I had to slaken the belt off and turn it one tooth back on the distributor pulley which worked but its guess work ?
But you will know when its right ,it will tickover normal & rev smoothly.

Just started all over again and timed the distributor aswell. My car is an automatic and it usualy revs when in park, the revs droping when Drive is selected. Dose any one know what should the revs be in park and neutral and the revs on drive. Thanks

The distributor is held by a 13mm bolt and clamp. They(the distributor body) often seize :( The ignition timing is /was no doubt incorrect anyway so get a timing light and adjust it correctly. Hopefully you will have enough adjustment without having to resort to removing and refitting the distributor
