Ok, well I changed my Rocker Cover over today, did the spark plugs then tackled changing the oil.

Got the car on a level surface and drove up 2 car ramps to raise the front.

Undid the sump plug after about 20 mins of draining and until it got to only a few drops, and noticed only about 2 1/4 litres had come out :?

I knew the oil was low tho before I drained it so wasnt to worried.

Re-newed the oil filter/gasket.

Then slowly poured just under 4 litres in as this is what the Haynes manuel says it takes.

Started it up let it idle for a bit then drove it about 1/4 mile, parked up turned the engine off and there was some smoke coming out of it :?

Now i had smoke coming from the front aswell but that was because i dribbled some on the manafold by accident.

Have a put way to much oil in?

Im waiting for it to settle and cool now and i'll check the dipstick again in a bit.

Thanks for any help.

perhaps you didn't get all the oil out, because you had it up on ramps?
when you put the sump plug back in, did you lower the car back to level?
you need to get back out there and check it again with the car level,
if its got too much oil in it you need to get it out,
as too much oil is almost as bad as too little

Should always fill up the oil slowly from empty and on a level surface. You should leave it a little while after a couple of litres and then check the level.......

In my opinion you have put too much oil in.
As it's smoking that show's the sign of oil passing the piston rings which is'nt a good thing
Really you should change the oil when the engine is at running temperature and on a flat surface to make sure you get all of the oil out. As it sound's that's what's happened then your new oil filter is now sorrounded by the old oil :?

Did you release the pressure of the seal in what the oil filter sit's in as that will probably hold about a litre of oil.

Sorry to put you on a downer but look on the bright side, at least it's a cheap repair and a lesson learnt :D

Um, no I didnt undo the nut on the oil filter housing.

I did let the car warm up tho.

It has stopped smoking now but is still about 5mm higher than the highest dot on the dipstick.

looks like a complete waste of oil and filter then :(

Will let some oil drain out then change it in a few weeks.

And yes, lessons have been learnt. It was the 1st time i'd done an oil chage so theres my escuse :D

Thanks for your help guys,

I would not really worry about it, the excess will be burned off. You only need to worry if the crank is hitting the oil, this "foams" the oil which will then not lubricate as the oil pressure will drop.

You dont need to have the car at running temps, i always leave my car for a few days to make sure all the old oil is in the sump not stuck in the cylinder head and the oil ways, then i drain stick the new filter on fill up and fire her up.
