1) i wouldn't rely on that. maybe true maybe not. either get it tested or budget for it being faulty.
2) not sure why the twin vanos is any more hassle. are you talking about the twin vanos m52 or the later m54 engine which, according to dan, is a poor swap choice.
"bore wear" is probably irrelevant by now. if it runs ok on a nikasil engine it probably will forever more. most engines will have been swapped. have a search for the pics that show how to identify a nikasil/steel linered engine, or you can ring BMW with the chassis number and ask if its been done.

The airbag sensor will mean an MoT fail..it may just be a sensor, but equally it may be the bag...StefanAnghel wrote:Thinking to buy a e36 328 manual to use it later in the e30
first Q,
from an ebay advert:
"car was off the road earlier in the year and took battery off, when i put it back the air bag sensor and traction control lights have come on. this does not affect the running of the car at all"
Is this true or is something wrong with the car?
The traction control light on means (probably) a faulty relay or a blown fuse....but it could also be a fault on the unit in front of the throttle body.
Have the codes read is your best bet...that will reveal all and if it is simply a code fault can be reset...
All M52 engines fitted to E36 (323/328) were single vanos...The dual vanos M52 was only in the E39 AFAIKsecond Q,
exactly from what year to buy it?
I've heard that up to 1998 M52 had problems with the bore wear but the 1999 is the double vanos one hard to put in the E30. So what you guys reccon?
Thanks
Nikisil bore wear affected cars built upto early/mid 1997. After that M52s had alusil liners...A nikisil engine *may* still be OK, but any high sulphur petrol used in the past could have accelerated the bore wear...
Personally, I'd use a nikisil engine as a bargaining tool...if fitted it would mean a much cheaper car....

Since they started fitting airbag lights
If you are buying a car for a conversion either confirm it has steel liners or have a compression test done before parting with any money, even steel liner engines can suffer with bore wear if they have been neglected, especially if they have been run with faulty sensors or in limp mode.

IIRC the Airbag light on is a fairly common fault with a sensor in the drivers seat base ?? - Might be wrong but sure I read this somewhere - if you're using the donk in the E30 not really that relevant anyway. Dunno about the DSC light though.

e30topless said : Proper BMW's have 4 headlights, last of the run was the E30 and E34/E32 anything after that is just complete shite

Airbag light could be down to the occupancy sensor in either seat(common on the passenger side).capri_rob wrote:IIRC the Airbag light on is a fairly common fault with a sensor in the drivers seat base ?? - Might be wrong but sure I read this somewhere - if you're using the donk in the E30 not really that relevant anyway. You could find that it came on after one of the front seats got adjusted and it's a loose or oxidised connecter under the seat which has throw it up.
Needs reset via OBD port
All info applies to an E39.
E36 will most likely be the same.
ASC/DSC traction light could be due to a dodgy/faulty ABS sensor or a unit with a wire that attaches to the throttle body(can't remember it's correct name) IIRC
Fault codes should tell you though.
May even be a dodgy/faulty DSC switch.
