My engine is out and before putting it back in i want to make it look clean.
is shot blasting or powder coating an option?
or what else can i use to clean & paint the engine?

Before doing anything, you should ask yourself this:
"What will I see of the engine when it's in the bay?"
Then if you can be bothered, clean those bits.
But to answer the question I don't think the whole engine can be shot blasted unless its taken to pieces. I may be wrong, I'm sure someone will come along and correct me.

A good going over with Gunk, or some other degreaser should do the job.

As above i would go with degreaser and then a tin of black hammerite and a paintbrush... and maybe some hammerite spray laquer to finish?

thanks .... will the hammerite be heat resistance? and I guess its the normal hammerite paint you get in the local DIY shop.

But do you really need it? I'm sure I've seen people on here saying they did theirs in regular Hammerite and it was fine.
I only mention it because I've been painting my rocker cover all afternoon with the high temp enamel stuff and it's a proper bugger to get a good finish. Streaky city. I'd use hammerite next time if I was sure it would take the temp ok..
