I second that. Credit where credit's due. If you're prepared to put in the time and money there's a lot you can achieve.
That's coming from someone who fragged a car because the glovebox torch wasn't working winkeye .

A fella at my work has an E21 hes owned for years and just had its resto finished. He was telling me he now hated the look of it due to the small alloys it has... Genuine 13" Alpinas....

I'll ask him if hes selling them, PM me when you've decided what to do & if you might be interested.

Sorry, I'm all for good project but that is beyond rusty. Try and get you money back breakng it and buy a good one. It will save you alot of pain.

If you do decide to rebuild this one you need to dip it first to find all the rot other wise you will end up chasing your own tail .

A lot of it will be in jest mate, wouldn't worry about it though.
I had an E21 320 on a T plate, loved it - apart from that bloody Solex carb...
It's your toy, if you're happy with the size of the task you've undertaken, go with it. Doesn't look as bad as some I've seen reach the finish line.
It will take time, and money, and patience, and skill. If you have all 4 attributes, go for it. Prove the doubters wrong, and end up with a lovely car to boot.

TBH, that's not half as bad as the silver one on page3 of this thread. You'll have that sorted in no time

Tbh it's rusty, but no worse than many an E30. It would be a good car to practice welding on, but don't buy any parts or panels until it's structurally good which may never happen.
The biggie on these is the cambelts as believe it or not, there was no set time limit or mileage to change it. They were reckoned to last the life of the engine and these pre 9/81 square tooth belts did last well. Trouble is, I don't think you can buy them - BMW do not supply new square tooth belts, just a kit of parts to convert to round tooth (E28 onwards) belts and pulleys. the Solex is good when it works, but you can fit a Ford 38DGAS 3 litre V6 carb.
I bet it's got twin servos as well - another massive expense which needs to be converted to the later single servo set up. Seized rear brake adjusters are another E21 problem. At least the 320/6 is simple under the bonnet, no real nasties.

Cheers guys, I know it ain't no easy task but I'm willing to give it a go, I will prob do most of the welding myself and see how it goes, like andy said it will be good practice. Also I found a few parts from
another car, it has reg plates with them, seems that they are off a bond 875. :?

I've got plenty of patience, it's the money that is the problem, saying that it's gonna be a slow process so will just have to budget as I go, I can't afford to just throw loads of money at it all at once.

I like the idea of recycling panels, like you say it will save the pennies which no doubt will be spent somewhere else, hmm I wonder when sir cliff will be touring again. 8)

cheers mate, I was really worried at first, but I've seen some in a worse state than this that have been saved, so hopefully I can do the same, it will be a long old project, but I will be well chuffed if I can get it done. As the saying goes, if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything. I hope this is true.

Do it mate. What's the worst that could happen....it doesn't come off? So what you tried, break it, get your cash back and you break even. However, if it does come off................

i reckon the hardest bit is fabricating bits to fit it, welding is the easy bit. dont know why everyone is afraid of rust, i learned to weld in about ten minutes lol. good luck to you mate once its done the feeling will be immense, maybe i'll try to restore an e21 one day

you're right mate, it's deffo worth a go, the car was cheap and I've already been offered cheap parts for it on the e21 forum. If it fails at least I've had a go. I'd rather lose a bit of money trying. It can't be as bad as buying a new car then selling it on in a couple of years, now that's how to lose money. :D
