Just a quick one, I've resorted to the zone because I can't find the info on the net. Anyway I've got a 318i touring with a 2.5 sport motor in it. The diff is still stupidly the 1.8 diff but I'm wanting to put a standard 2.5 diff in it. I have sourced one but want to bolt the new one in and change the oil in it.

All I'm looking for is if anybody could recommend wat diff oil I need and also how much I'm going to need? Is there a sightglass or do I fill it up until it's full, I'm not sure.

Any replies are much appreciated, matt

????? As far as the E30 is concerned, we ARE the net!
Oil you require is SAE 80 to API-GL4.
You will need 0.9 litres or 1.7 litres, depending on whether you have a small or medium diff., and you fill it to the bottom of the filler hole, with the car level.

Just as a note, if it is a LSD diff, make sure you use mineral oil.

Synthetic oil screws up the friction plates.

If its an lsd its a complete different grade of oil too! If its an LSD you would want something like castrol SAF-XJ 75w-140

Small but important tip: make sure you can undo the top filler plug before you undo the lower drain plug. It's a sod of a job if the filler plug cannot be undone once your diff is drained!
