Now I been driving my Motorsport cab for a few days, here starts the dum questions;

- What if I started to take the roof down with all the windows still up, is this a bad thing? Could it cause damage?

- Does your door windows get caught on the fabric of the roof as you shut the door? Can I sort it?....and I don't know if its due to this, but should I put the windows up in a certain order [if they all down]? Cos sometimes the passenger door window goes up leaving a big gap between itself and the rear window?

- And maybe the dumest question of them all; its ok to drive with the roof up but all the windows down innit?

its fine to drive withe roof up and the windows down. no need for an order and its ok to take the roof down/up with the windows up. the top of the windows sould go inbetween the rubber seal that goes around the roof linning.

i have to put my rear windows down to put my roof up down, im guessing yours is a leccy hood?? so if you try and put it down with the windows up, i cant imagine it doing the electric motors any and i know there prone to breaking and there not cheap to fix!

Hope this helps

Thats cool. As its my first cab and its all new to me, I only just started taking the roof down [yep BrAdZ its leccy] with the windows up and then I relised what I was doing!

The windows do go in between the rubber seals elliot - but with the passenger door, the right hand top corner of the window sits on the outside of the roof when you shut the door - unless you slightly push the fabric of the roof up as you close the door, or just put the window down a little; shut the door; then put the window back up [going where it should]. That make sense? I might take some pics?

ALWAYS give the roof a hand when opening it ie. push it up while pressing the button This helps save the hood motor..have look at this site

http://www.e30ic.com/

The window should not catch on the roof so either adjust the window or adjust the roof line (there is an allen key hole for this on the frame behind a rubber cap)

enjoy it, I do

Cheers Dave.

Yep, I'll take some pics over the weekend. Reckon it could be the alignment of the windows?

Oh, I just thought of another stupid question; can I lock the car from the inside when I'm driving? It's got an aftermarket alarm - would be be down to that?

I would never put the roof up without having the windows down, even if only down a couple of inces... the roof and the window adjustments can't be guaranteed, it's just safer... later BMW convertibles with one switch tht does it all, lowers the windows an inch or two before the roof starts moving

You right oneblueleg, just to be safe I will make sure all the windows are down. But it couldn't of done anything to the window alignments that I accidently started to retract the roof with the windows fully up could it?

Here we go; though the pics aint that good you get the idea I hope?

Pic1 - Passenger door when you shut it. Big gap!
Image

Pic2 - After what happens in Pic1; I opened the door, lifted the roof a little and shut the door again. As you can see, the window is now under the roof but the gap is still there.
Image

Pic3 - I then got into the car, lowered the passenger window and then back up and the gap in gone.

I want to be able to shut the door as normal. The same happens on the driver side but always fits in the right place if you lift the roof up a bit - so its not as bad.

Nope, original hood [which is in ace condition]. Like DaveD and elliot said; much be the roof or window alignment?

Not sure, I shall try later. Though I guess it would align fine, cos it only happens when you shut the door and it hits the roof; as of pic1.

Over the weekend I'll try all different ways, just so I know exactly when and when it doesn't do it.

i have this problem also but only on the drivers side and not all the time, and mine sorts itsself out if you lift the hood up. Its had a new hood on it so how do i tell if its alligned properly. As for the windows, i have an information thing on the drivers sunvisor and it says to have the windows down when putting down the roof but it doesnt say what to do when putting it up, i put my fronts up fully, then the backs and then lower the fronts a little and then put the hood up, then just put the fronts windows up when the roof is fastened.

I have similar probs with my windows overlapping the roof, Its definately a door/window issue on my car not a roof alignment one.

By the way I like the link you posted DaveD.

Hi...nearly always it is the window that needs adjustment, can be done vertically and horizontally when remove door panel...worth doing asap as normally ends up wearing the roof and then you are into at least Ԛ£400 for a new softtop...now the winters coming you need to put your hardtop on anyway

Good luck...yours must be an 89 car...the BMW car club are trying to gather a list of chassis numbers for the Motorsports

yeah i do belive mine is an issue with the windows and not the roof, like i said my drivers window also overlaps the roof more than not, but on occassion after i have sorted this by lifting the roof up, it also seems to overlap the rear window. How do i go about re-alligning the window, is it hard to do?Im pretty good and doing things just eaisly prone to stupid things driving me mad, if you get me.
cheers jonny

hi..if you take the door trim off you will be able to the screws that secure the window and adjust accordingly..just take care not to remove compltely and ensure dont damage trim when popping the panel on the door...goodluck

ALWAYS lower all the windows when operating an electric / hydraulic roof, i have seen many mechanisms and motors broken because people fail to adhere to this basic part of the operating procedure. If you watch the roof in operation you will see before the 'flap' opens the roof mechanism move forward, if the rear windows are up it can't so it usually breaks something ! .
Unfortunately softtops shrink as they get older and the roof catching the door glass syndrome is an unfortunate side effect. Sometimes with careful adjusting of the dropglasses this problem can be alleviated , but often by lowering the glass to clear the roof you will then have water leak issues at the A post and wind noise problems.

ive tested the switch and it worked and even ordered a new 1from germany but still dont work...where are the micro switches at???i pulled the switch off the plug and with the triangle at the top, shorted the two bottom contacts which makes it go down and the top and bottom contacts on the rught which makes it go up...as far as i can see the two middle contacts just illuminate the switch.?.i may be wrong tho... :?
