whether a car is built by a person or a robot is probably the very last thing that would ever enter my head when considering a purchase

knowing the top guys built my car with love makes me think its a bit more special than an E30 with rude boy wings built in front of a 316i 2dr and behind a 320i 4dr by the donkeys on the munich production line.
Were not talking about considering if a car was built by hand or not though but its a nice thing to know

Come on Simon, the apprentices at Sytner 'up the north' hardly constitute 'top guys'

built with love?
they may like cars, but at the end of the day someone working on a production line is just doing their job. they don't care one jot about the actual car whether theyre bolting an assembly in by hand or guiding a machine. their job is to put a pile of bits together with a reasonable degree of skill in a reasonable time frame, before it moves on to someone else to do the same.
the fact that it was bolted together by Hans with a ratchet in one hand, bratwurst in the other or an accurately calibrated and computer guided autobot3000 makes sod all difference. i'm more interested in how a car drives than any imaginary images of how it might have been put together.
to me 'specialness' comes from being the best at what it was built for and as i love motorsport, the road going version of arguably the greatest saloon racing car of all time is about as special as it gets.

like mentioned, does that matter or make a car better or something youd concider when buying a car ?? ..and its still 20 years old anyway like e30s...which have all been taken aprt, and put back together and had all sorts of bits replaced over the years....so my cars now hand built tooBlitz wrote:E34 M5 is hand built and E30 M3 is not.polsta wrote:Alex wrote:Belive it or not Its faster than a 318isi beat him in a race so i think not

It was produced at BMW M GmbH in Garching, Germany and like the previous M5, was entirely hand-built. It utilized the 535i chassis which was produced at BMW's Dingolfing plant. Assembly was done either by a single M employee or a team of M employees and generally took about two weeks. It is rumored that the test drivers of the E34 M5 could determine who or what team made each specific M5, due to characteristic quirks of the handbuilt nature of the E34 M5. The engines were also built by hand by BMW M technicians. All of the E34 M5 powerplants were built to 5% of advertised output.
