Hi all been a while since i posted blew my 325i last year an not had the heart to so much as look at it but i'm on a mission this year to sort it out. Gotta take the engine out to re-skim so i'm think of leaving the stock engine out and putting a bigger engine in instead. The only problem i've got is i dont know if any bigger bmw engine will fit straight in can anybody help? Would like a 3ltr if one will fit. Cheers
its nice to know i'm doing good for the environment.

iirc, BMW had a thing a few years back saying that any BMW engine will fit into any BMW.
To prove their point they stuck a V12 from E38 750 into a Z3! 8O

So in answer to your question....

The obvious choices are the M30 3.5 ltr which is the old anchor from the 635, 535 & 735 - this is the straight 6.

Then there is the V8 found in the later 530, 730 which is a 3ltr V8. Then the 4ltr V8 from the 540, 740 etc. If you are doing a V8 swap it would be madness to put the 3ltr version in when the 4ltr is going to be the same effort.

The V12 fits in from the 750 & 850

You've also got the 24v 6 pots from the E36 such as the 2.5 M50 and 2.8 M52.

Also, the E36 M3 engine and the E34 M5 engine.

Look in the engine swaps/ forced induction section for ideas. They have all been done many times.

it all depends on what you want to achieve, how much you've got to spend and whether you can do the work yourself or need someone to do it for you.

Alpina 2.5 needed a different cam, exhaust and remap to get 192BHP.

its been in the family for nearly 15 years, before i had it its been well looked after. it was on the on the rolling road before it was remapped, it was running 171bhp wen it left the showroom and 2 years ago it was running 168bhp hardly lost any tourqe either

Your car will not have 200hp, I would bet my e30 on that.

Easiest way to go about it is the HMS m30. If you fancy something lighter and revier and more modern, then m52 it with m50 inlet and remap. Will see you to a real 210-220hp.

If fixated on a 3L plus, then there is the S50 (e36 m3 engine) but from zoners who have done it, you are looking 5k+.

Dyno charts for the near 200bhp? Sounds like a strong engine. I just don't see 25bhp+ coming from a chip, though. 180-185 is gettable with some ease. 200bhp needs quite a bit of work. Even cracking mid 190s isn't super easy.

Have a look at an M52. A usable, modern low 190bhp engine that can be tweaked up a bit more with relative ease.

When you say 2.5, you're referring to an M50/52? These had two camshafts.

Yes...cheap! Unless it is garbage and needs a complete going over.

What mileage on the engine? Condition? Any receipts for work done? etc., etc.,

You will want to get it pressure tested and a clean up skim anyway.

Guessing you are going to stay with the m20 then?

Pardon?

If you want an "easy" and relatively cheap upgraded engine, just go down the m52 route. Will give you a true 190hp with the benefits of being modern. Been done a lot too so help is always at hand.

If not then fix up your current m20. But won't cost you that much more to go m5x, mine was about £700 all in.
