My brake light warning light on the overhead display keeps coming on randomly, though the brake lights are working... anyone know why?

Poor contact on one of the lampholders, cheap out of spec lamps, or just possibly, a failing brake light switch.

Just cured a similar problem, well almost exactly the same, only I had multiple warning lights come up randomly. sometimes would be number plate bulb warning, other times brake lights and side lights. Cured in one fell swoop,
There is a connector in the left hand side of the boot around about where the leccy ariel is, as we know E30 boots quite leaky and damp, if this connector gets too damp it will either short out and cause your tail lights not to work or tell you that they are not working when they are.
Bought some stuff called corrosion block on eBay, NO association with the seller, disconnected two plugs on connector, opened it up, lots of green and rusty corrosion in here, honestly. sprayed it on, and magic, does exactly what it says on can, forces moisture out while protecting connections.
No more false readings on warning panel. Sorry to write an essay, but honest its good.
