Any 320i drifters?

My best mate has been inspired by my sport that I got recently. He wants some steer from the rear fun, but suffers quite serious insurance persecution so a sport is out of the equation. Anyone on here got an LSD equipped 320i, and is it any good? We have decided a 320i is best because of the torque from the M20 rightness, but will it be any fun? Opinions please.....

2.5 not an option really, too many convictions on his licence still.
Just thought the torque of the six pot would be better than any four pot stuff, and I've seen iS's doing donuts and stuff when they have limited slip. TBH, apart from in the dead of summer it seems like its never dry anyway......

yerp........ im a 320 drifter, just got my lsd fitted too

I cant afford to insure a 2.5 this year, i dont find it a problem getting the arse end out, and its a cabriolet too

With some poor tyres on it should be ok but in my 323i with 4.1 LSD and good tyres I can't get the back out in the dry just with power unless it is a very tight corner with full (or almost) throttle, but the wheels won't spin for long before they get grip.

finding an iS with a LSD.... needle / haystack come to mind !

I don't even want to think about a clutch kick, that would just kill my transmission and diff. Trying to overcome the grip it has couldn't be good. With cheap tyres it would be a lot better though.

I think a 320 should be a better option than a 318is for drifting because of the torque like you said.

I run a 320i with a !!3,25LSD!!
I made 4th place in a local drift event following 2 camaros and a porsche 944.

a 320i can be made to drift, should use junk tires in the back and good ones in the front along with stiff rear suspension and a lot of pressure in the tires,

yeah, iԚ´ve got 225 sport contiԚ´s on the back good tyres but they aint slipping for shit

like gunni said and a good clutch kick with maybe a pull of the hand brake too to get her going

u want about 34 psi front and 38 psi rear will help too

plus horrendous tyres on the back.

318iS actually has more torque than a 320 aswell as bhp

There's no doubt you'll struggle to hold the arse end out for more than a few seconds in the dry with a 320.

A 325 can struggle to be honest, and you have 40bhp extra.

But go for it and see what happens!

When we were at a stevenge met once Davetouring took me and Wil318iS (puma boy ) out in his touring when it had a 2.0 lump in it

2.0 will drift "ok" in the dry is all i will say

I think you may misunderstand me slightly, neither me nor him want to become international drift kings and compete or stuff, we just wanna do donuts and get the back out a bit in the wet in a general barry boy stylee. Not that we are the aforementioned type of people either.......

If u just want to fart about get 318 it will slide in the wet just as easy as a 320

Well they are supposed to have fairly strong diffs and gearboxes I think? It must put a fair bit of strain on it though and I just couldn't do that to my car.

We used to have a Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 which was a turbo AWD sedan (before the EVO) and that is what my 323i feels like on dry bitumen (except without the power or torque). It really feels like an AWD car, no wheelspin even at full throttle over bumps and stuff. Even with some gravel on the road it still needs a decent amount of throttle to get any reaction. In the wet or on dirt it's different, still has good grip but it is definately RWD . In the dry I imagine it would take a decent clutch kick to get it going, something like a 5000rpm+ clutch dump and I just couldn't do that.

there are these russian tyres OMSKTYRE(Russia) or some like that
it's like they are made from plastic, i once put them on my 316 and i could drift, but be carefull on rain you will not stop drifting there is no way to get a grip with those tyres

if u wanna forget about grip, get some nankangs dude, they are way scary.

I tried to put my foot down in the wet this morning, and it was a gradual increase in throttle in 2nd gear, not a stab, and the back end got a proper wriggle on, missus was doing her makeup in the passenger seat and I got the inevitable "tut" from her, thinking I was deliberately doing it,when I wasn't, honest!
