Cooks m52 316i - going S54!

Engine is nailed down, prop is nailed in too and so is all the gear linkages. In the end we used the e36 325i lever carrier jobber with the e36 328i linkage (was abit better than the straight rod 325i m50 rod).

Euro car parts are coonts! I bought a new prop centre bearing... opened the box to find the packaging open and no bearing. A swift phone call to ECP and the bearings are seperate! WTF, they sell "prop centre bearings" but they are only the fucking carrier! how does that work!?

Can anybody confirm what we do with the temperature sender and what to do with the gearbox reverse switch? the 328i box reverse switch setup is different to the e30 setup.

Engine going in...


After a bit of buggery and pokery its finally on the mounts



Spent hours trying to do a HDR style photo and this is the best i got

why no M50 inlet?! should be taken off the old engine no?!

Was going to leave it off for the dyno day in a few weeks to see the base figure on the engine before fettling it. It will be easier with the inlet off to do the wiring for the temperature sender, im presuming im having to wire the coont in, it would be rude not to mistakenly put the m50 inlet on.

Use the E30 setup on the E36 box - From memory, the E30 has 2 wires with spade connectors that connect to the switch. I had a plug that fitted the E36 switch so just connected that to the spade connectors from the E30 wiring. Job jobbed.

The E36 wiring isnt needed, so just gets tucked out of the way.

Cheers james! Gearbox wiring is sorted now. We've got alot done today so im bound to have forgotton something! I was wiring in the engine following the diagram in the sticky at the top of the m50/2 section when i got to a wire which was (iirc!) pin 14 of the x20 m52 loom to c101 plug pin 14... Pin 14 of x20 doesn't exist on my loom Bit of internet searching (thank fook for iphones!) and it was soon connected to pin 9 (iirc!) instead.

Eko fitted the m50 oil filter housing, alternator and PAS pump becuase of the different fittings between the m52 and m50 hoses (and spent most of the day being very homo and cleaning everything! Well worth it though tbh). Another moment of genuis and he "customised" the e36 fan shroud onto the rad - looks VERY good!

Things left to do -
Get the tee piece welded to the dipstick,
Wire in the EWS,
Drink some tea,
fill with fluids + bleed the system,
Wire in the brown temperature sensor,
Fit the exhaust,
Drink more tea,
Drive it!!

And somehow nobody got killed after a neighbours parrot was squarking ALL day, the icecream man playing his tunes every 20 minutes and other neighbours being noisy coonts and a whining dog ALL day.

C101 is still in the oem place. You can see the diagnostic plug on the drivers side strut with the other plug



I removed the plug from the other holder, drilled its own holder and bolted it through the battery tray using a hole already provided from bmw themselves - it aint moving

Has inspired me to finally do something about tidying up the wiring on mine - going to have another go at fitting all inside the 4pot covers and get one of those M3 bits for up by the battery tray.

Im liking the fan shroud, makes it look much more factory fitted

Few more little jobs done when you left.
Throttle cable connected.
Starter-ghost terminal lead fitted.
Clutch bled.
Fuel pipes connected.
Servo pipe fitted.
MAF and whatever that airbox you supplied are in place.
Basically all thats left is fit the manifolds when they come back,modify M50 dipstick tube which is in hand and I think besdies fluids and EWS its done

What a pain! Wired the ews to the diagram in the sticky in the 24v engine section... no start only cranking. Had a chat to bob_s who sorted me out with another diagram (and confirmed the c101 wiring - cheers bud!). Tried that ews wiring and... no start. double checked EVERYTHING including switching the fuel pipes over several times throughout the process and removing the spark plugs, checking for spark, etc.
At this point i was starting to pull my hair out with the "simple to wire in EWS", this is when eko remembered about random dave giving him ews wiring diagram which he says he has never had problems with. The diagram was the same as the bob_s one at a glance apart from a couple of written on connections at the bottom. Changed them to the written down connections AND IT LIVES! scared the shit out of me tbh - got so used to it only turning over!

I've got the connections i've made so 'ill be making a new list up for other peoples benefit!

I'm itching to drive it! I fooked up the fan wiring though, designed it based on the e36 wiring including relays for both the high speed and low speed fan settings. My fan only works on the one setting anyway and becuase the wiring has been modified to work on the one setting and one of the relays is wrong it doesnt work or it is on all the time so i'm going to wire the fan back into the manual switch - which i like tbh.

Just waiting on the exhaust now, then off to see just how rapid its going to be with a 3.64 lsd!

Im estatic about my manifolds. M52 manifolds with 50mm(iirc) stainless downpipes. The quality of the job is nothing short of epic. Im so happy about them!

Eventually i'll get some h&r springs with billies. The exhaust was done by a local chap - the quality of his work is excellent, the term perfectionist is an understatement!

Yeah, the H+R's seems pretty decent. I was told to get the -35's cos the -60's would be too low for the sump.

It looks like a top job on those exhausts. Impressive. Need to get something like that done myself i think. Mine are 2 o clock in the morning shed build quality at the moment.

I'm maybe going to go 60mm drop on the front of the chromie due to the light weight of the M52

Will look ace but I reckon the sump will still be mega low. Depends what your gonna use it for though. I wouldnt get anywhere near a speed bump with a 60 drop. Front valance would come off and then the sump probably.lol

I had a 40 drop on the touring with the Alpenis front spoiler and never had any speed hump dramas. I just don't think 40 will be a big enough drop with 50 profile tyres on 15" rims.

With the lack of weight of the alloy block I don't reckon a 60 drop would end up being 60. Maybe I'm being foolishly optimistic

Yeah, im in agreement with 40 not being low enough looks wise. Im on 50 profile tyres with my drop. Tbh, id just like to get coilovers.lol

Guess you will just have to try it and see what happens. Only way.
