256E1.
Slightly irrelevant, but pretty sure the Realoem build date is not
100 % accurate, i say this because i have reaon to believe
the above date is my cars registration date, not the 05/1986 build date
i was previously given.

Mine does go well and I previously understood it to be one of the first facelifts with a HC engine and 1.3 motronic, but also the earlier worm drive electric window system.

Woops. So 6/1988 is the latest now which incidently according to the etk is when the 9.4:1 comp ratio piston was used until but confusingly the etk states 256E2 engines from 9/87 with no cut off date.

who gave you the 05/1986 build date?
after getting the Cab.
Has Build date 05/1986.
Registration date. 07/ 1986.
Of course the Spec sheet could always have been wrong,
as i say it,s slightly irrelevant. Will ask the Dealer, next time i,m
there , to double check.

Whats the other numbers on the VIN plate mean, theres a headlight symbol with 1.0 written beside it, & another number written above it?

seems like mine is a bit of a mish mash of early/late.
engine is 256K1 but there is no cat and also no lambda sensor. it runs tronic 1.3 and the vin numner is the old style with all numbers and no letters. 13 button OBC, full electrics and pop out rears, etc.
build in late 88 but first registered early 89.
saying all of that tho.. since converting the car to 5 speed manual it does go alot quicker than u would think for only having servicing/maintenance items done and a handfull of mods. only mods are a chip, home made intake, Z3M gearstick and a backbox. i believe its got a 4.10 diff since it was an auto and i retained the diff but i have never checked the diff out to see.. 5th gear is only slightly above 1:1 ratio. goes like stink for whats done to it tho.

Right, it transpires that,
256E1 compression ratio of 9.7:1 (early motronic)
256E2 Compression ratio of 9.4:1 (late motronic)
256K1 Compression ratio of 8.8:1 (late motronic, cat prepped or with a cat)
For UK cars,
256E1 sept '85 to sept '87
256E2 sept '87 to june '88
256K1 june '88 to end of production.
