Ok stripped most of the stuff of the 3.5 yesterday only thing im not certain about doing (as i've never done one before) is the timing chain..

the dizzy cap is still attached and i am asking what the procedure is for taking the chain off

should the timing be spot on before the dizzy cap is removed? and if anyone has any pictures to help id greatly appreciate it!!

thanx peeps :thumb:

First is to remove the tensioner (oil pan to catch the oil)

Just take it all off, Cap, rotor front wheel, cover's the lot. Don't worry about timming as this is all easy when your putting it back together. The chain just let lie loose.

When it's all ready to go back together pm me and i will pm back my number to talk you through it.

i just realised i didnt ask if you have to take the crank pulley completely off? i've heard these bolts are extremely tight

or could i leave the bottom end alone?

Leave the bottom end alone, that crank bolt is a fuckin' pain in the arse if you don't have extension bars to hand.
Are you changing all the gaskets etc...... on the M30?

will be buying a head gasket set hopefully changing everything!
want to speak to my engineer about polishing the head/inlet while its all off.

lol i've heard they (bottom crank bolt) are notorious and if i could get it to work it wouldnt be too much of a problem, but im doing it on the driveway so its a bit difficult lol

The wierd thing is tho Rav there is a smallish rad in there which fits but it was held on with cable ties and there was no fan...hence headgasket failure lol

i will prob get pics up tomorrow of my progress, but im thinking of investing in an E28 rad and fan as i dont trust this small rad

I'm running a E34 rad, Lee parkes is or was running a M20 325 rad with fan and no issues, so it looks like not having a fan was the main cause.

Why dont you give the head a 'good' skim like gareth did to raise the compresion, ie more power 8)

iirc he gave it a 1mm skim

Do send the head off for a skim, regardless.

And make sure the head bolt hole are really clean before you put it back together or you will crack the block.

of course! i've never taken a head off a car without getting it skimmed, already got it off so why not? :thumb:

and i've always ran a tap down the thread to clean them up..especially when the head bolts are as gunky as what came out of the M30 today lol

really considering skimming 1mm off now winkeye

Its true...i owe it to the M30 to do it lol

ok im ordering a headgasket set and head bolts from GSF but the only headbolts i can find are :
011BM0060 CYL HEAD BOLT SET E34;E36;E38;E39;E46 X5 DIESELS 21.75

all the rest are 520i or 518i's

are they the right ones?

Got an e-mail back from GSF and here the correct head bolts you need just incase anyone else is looking to buy them from GSF:-

Hi
Thank you for your order.
The head gasket set will be either Elring or Reinz brand.
The head bolts you have selected are the incorrect ones as they are for the diesel engines and the correct one for the M30 petrol engines are
011BM0071 @ 19.80 for the set

Cant wait to get it all skimmed and back together now :o:

Alright guys the head is going to be at the engineers tomorrow morning for its -1mm skimm 8)

i measured my rad today and its 18inches wide by 14inches tall

is this not ridiculously small for a big 3.5 engine behind it?
