It feels very pricise in and out of change, no ambiguity. but it is notchy so extra effort required pulling out of gear but no real difference really... i luv it!!!

Couple this with the chip i had from ant recently ( sorry for not saying thank you fella, i did mean to do it but had honestly forgot until just now    ) and the car feels so much more solid with itself

prices may vary

Z4 shifter Ԛ£36
plastic collar Ԛ£5
new connector clip Ԛ£.50

(plus a new illum. gearknob but dont worry about that  )

40 odd squid, i dont mind the price myself, feels sweet and well recomended for those tired and lazy, stretcth armstrong gear changes :D

a pic of the old one..R.I.P

Nice one mate, looks great.
I've done the same with mine but used a pattern short shift. For the first month mine was very notchy, even became annoying at times but has now settled in and feels alot smoother.
I had to bend my gear selector b'cos mines a baby 318i lux so throw felt alot more than a 30% reduction on the normal throw but it looks the same as yours going through the gears :D

looks good, well done dude.
just wondering, whats does "notchy" feel like, does it mean, you need to be more precise with the shifts, or that you need to be more careful with the clutch...?

Stiff, feels like you are actually putting it into gear rather than it just sliding in without you realising :D

Not so much breaking it but you just have to put a bit of extra ummfff into changing gear for the first month or so and then it get's easier :)

u can feel it come out of sync and into sync, a strange sensation but a much more exact feeling in shift, no more grinding second on a fumbled pull  , it lets u know when its in

tom! was well quick!

followed the instuctions from the zone tech reports, and was surprised how easy it came together..

(COPIED FROM A PM TO DANPAL318-IS)

first off, to get the knob off, pull it up HARD in a twisting motion from side to side it should slip off , just dont smack yԚ´self in the face with it!

then, remove the gaiter, unclips from each corner.

uner there is the rubber sock soundproofing. flat head screwdriver in at the side and peel it out un clip the reverse light of u wont get the sock off

now, Jack up the car on the drivers side (yours) and stick an axle stand under it,. with the rubber sock off u should be able to see into the cabin.

follow the shifter down to the connecting rod, its held on with a clip, push the clip up from the top middle, should ping and slide out.

now,. get back in the car. to remove the shifter u need to "unlock" it from the casing thing that its sat in,.. get 2 small head flat screwdrivers and slide them into a grove at 3 and 9 oԚ´clock on the plastic clip... push the shifter forward so u have some space.. then cross the screwdrivers so they look like chopsticks, but still have them wedged into some tabs at 3 and 9.. then turn the clip 90 degreesto your right..

u shoud be able to see some grooves on the casing where the clip is in, look for 2 tabs that are revealed as u turn the clip.... when the tabs and the grooves line up PULL!!!

to go in is the same but backwards.. , new clip.. silicone grease inside, pop on to new shifter

post shifter and clip into casing !! MAKE SURE U LINE THE TABS AND THE GROOVES UP WHEN PUTTIN THE CLIP IN!!

push in, then chopstick the clip into position.. back under the car. locate the shifter end and the connecter rod, refit and close with the clip pin thing

the clip only goes on one way, so if i doesnt stay on its not on correct..

Well, i think thats it fully loaded i havnt got pics mid process ( i did it outside the dealers ) but there is a tech report on it with all the pics to make my descriptions a little most understandable

Dude, this was a bit of a prob :? , there are 2 part codes for the shifter, i dont know which one we ordered ( pot lucked it :? ) and i ripped the code sticker off when puttin the rubber sock back

i can give u the numbers to both though

Nice work johnono...
This is near the top of my list for weekend projects. I've been waiting for an informative opinion on these.

Looking Good fella-you're certainly more "gun ho" with doing work on it now :D

Shifter looks a lot more squat, and tighter, I can almost sense what it feels like 8O

silky smooth 8)

as for the mods you've done, if the touring ever returns to the road (business does well, or petty prices drop) then they're happening to mine!!!

Tightened up the gear linkaage on my bro's skoda-now like trying to thread a needle 8O :D

I see how it works now. You just fit a shifter with better gearing. ie: more sticking out below the pivot and less sticking out above.

The more lower the pivot, the shorter the shift but you can only go so far otherwise it will hit the prop.
