clocking e46. easy or hard?

im e46 mad at the moment and a mate is going looking at a 2004 320d with 86k on the clock. we motochecked it and it told us it had 121k on the clock.!! are these web checks spot on? and also how hard is it to act mod the milage? some say its stored in 3 places? and if you take it to main dealer they could find out if its been tampered with? many thanks Aran.
