Would you have the petrol over the derv? Thinking of a little bit of fuel eco.

I know the dervs hold the money alot better. Do they go wrong alot?
What about the 525i? or is that gay???

An E39 525i is a very nice car. Reasonably quick and a far better drive than the earlier 523i - they really are flat until 4000rpm and hardly brisk after that. A 530i though costs little more and the extra 40bhp really make a difference.staley_turbo wrote:I know the dervs hold the money alot better. Do they go wrong alot?

The diesels were nice cars when new but can be a bit of a minefield as they get older - swirl flaps, blown turbos from owner's not letting them cool down after a drive etc. There is just more to go wrong and there are plenty of horror stories. The petrol's are simpler but by no means bulletproof - overheat a M54 and its a boat anchor.
E39s are now getting on and are two generations old and most will need a few $ thrown at them to remedy an assortment of niggles. Most will also probably need some preventative maintenance - cooling system overhauled, sealed for life gearbox oil changed etc.
B7 has a 530i Sport so may be worth having a word with him.

I've recently bought a 530i Sport.
I decided to go for the petrol over the diesel due to only actually doing about 6k a year, and the increased running costs that seem to affect the diesels.
Worth going onto the bmw5 forum, and having a read through the E39 section, plenty of info and 530i v 530d topics to read through to help you in your decision.
Love my E39, no regrets, though it is thirsty around town! Having a full eisenmann system on it doesn't help though

I can just about stomach the fuel costs in mine, so putting a exhaust on it that actually allows the v8 noise to be unleashed, would be akin to commiting financial suicide!
Still, it would be rude not to have a loud exhaust for the Le mans trip considering my workplace!
Manual 530i sport over the diesel, if you are concerned about economy, otherwise an auto 530i sport.

Sure any of the 5s will be less economical the the Cupra though?

I do indeed own a 530i sport. And it's not bad on fuel all things being considered. Driving from Gatwick to Camberley on Bank holiday monday I zero'd the obc fuel consumption and it returned 29.9mpg. However, I'd question whether thats more economical than a cupra?
I suppose thats why you questioned the derv? They are a nice car but i'm just not a deisel man, no matter how fuel efficient they are. The smell, smoke, noise and additional potential issues made it a no brainer for me.

I think it was very cheap! for the condition aswell.Got it on the cheap i take it then!?
My cupra r, i get 20mpg around town and 30mpg if im steady on a long run. I guess about the same as a 530i, but you have alot more comfort. Thats another thing im looking for, although i have bought the m535i.
If you got it proper cheap just punt it on to me for the same price once your fed up of the sub 20MPG
Suprised the Cupra is that low on fuel, makes me even more glad i went for the FR TDi instead.
