So we have been working on somebodies secret S50 turbo conversion 8)

It´s a S50B32 and will be running a Borg Warner S366 turbo.
The manifold is fully split pulse and tubular.

Here are some pics of the manifold being made, the M50 is just used as mockup. Also M50 engine mounts that allow M20 motor bushings.

More pics and details later

Good good :)

It´s getting ceramic coated soon for heat protection and long term corrosion protection.
I´m getting very anxious to map and test this insanity.

Obviously space is tight, so you are aware the M50 head is 5mm narrower aren't you?!

Superb dude !

60mm w/gate from the pic.

Snail looks quite small, should boost from am=lmost zero rpms :thumb:

Low comping this one Gunni ? the s50B30/32 with SC needed a CR drop to get the best fromthe comp trim, I'm guessing not the case here ?

It´s got lower compression.

Heres the real turbo that will power that thing.

Awesome work Gunni.

I've toyed with the idea of S/C power for my S50 but my wallet can't handle the strain!

Looking forward to seeing this run. What kind of torque/power/boost threshold are you looking for with this? You see a lot of turbo'd S50's on youtube badly implemented so the threshold is right up at the high rpm's where they suddenly develop all the torque in the world and try and kill you... Fun but not very useable! I know you usually take a more sensible approach to forced induction...

Good project!

It´s going to run pump fuel and thus the vanos has been removed to not develop to much torque downlow.

I´ll post figures when they happen.
The turbo manifold is split to assist in developing a low end though with such a large turbo
as it´s been specifically selected to give low backpressure when boosting so less boost = more power = safer setup.

This is not designed for in-town diesel like torque character which is what small turbos do.
This is designed to go FAST.

The turbo I have is a real Borg Warner S366.
There are literally thousands and thousands of people running S257´s from Bullseye with improved spool and great power.

I did my homework and Borg Warner is right in front of everybody in terms of turbocharger technology. The only reason this 366 came from Bullseye is because there was quite a long waiting period getting it locally.

I´m not ever going to buy a Garrett related turbocharger if I can get an equivalent one cheaper.

The 57mm Borg Warner me and my buddies put on a M50B25 is literally the best turbocharger setup I have ever seen. It would make amble low end yet with extremely fast spool.

And Bullseye has not been dropped by BW.

It needs alot of fuel

Image

And it needs to be built from strong stuff.

Image
Image

I´ve been "away" so to speak for 3 solid months of assignments and exams (BSc Motorsport Engineer now)and then a tuning trip to Iceland( few rally cars and a bunch of bmw´s turbo and not, mostly turbo though) and moving to Oxford. Let´s say it´s been insane few months and it´s not letting down now ( I still need to go back in august to Iceland to do a couple of Skylines and turbo BMW´s and possibly some Imprezzas).

Things are finally moving along with this stuff though.

Intercooler and s50 oil cooler have been fitted, smaller brake booster and now parts of the fuel system. The engine will be finished and installed hopefully VERY soon and I can get on with things to the finishline.

I talked with Shaun at TDI and the coating is from Zircotec, but you always have to go through a dealer of there´s.

Your best to talk to TDI about the prices as it varies alot with the length and size of the manifold.

Only just spotted this thread Gunni. Interesting work indeed, well done. I am sure that building that manifold was quite a task, it certainly is an amazing item that you have created. I look forward to hearing the results.

Also, well done on the BSc Motorsport Eng.

Geoff

I didn´t make the manifold my mates did. They did spend ALOT of time making it and I´m 100% sure it will do the job right.

Today I finished off the fuel system

The original fuel pump wire now turns on those 3 relays. Each relay then turns on a fuel pump, a walbro in the tank and those two 044 pumps. All the pumps are getting power right from the battery so the least possible voltage drop will occur.

Tomorrow I´ll be testing the system for leaks anywhere. I have no interest in getting leaks when I want to get the engine running so some testing is in order.
